S3 hesitation - high rpm

Hey all,

Just got myself a 2001 AMK S3 recently however have started to noticed an issue. I have it booked in to get checked over (3 week waiting list for mechanic!) - but would like to try figure it out first if possible.

At high RPM in neutral it hesitates between a certain range (somewhere between 5.5-6k) basically revs up fine to 5.5k, then slows down & hesitates, then after 6k keeps reving full speed again.

Also, Occasionally when taking off hard in 1st it cuts out for a split second - enough to throw you around in the car a bit, then it takes off again.

Power is awesome down low but just seems to die up high.

Update - found a "squishy" pipe which seems to connect to the pcv system. Feels like it could rip open if I squeezed it too much and seems very soft rubber. Would this cause any issues like those mentioned above?

The main issue wasn't the lack of power/boost, rather the cutting out in first on hard launch.... The revving issue was discovered while trying to figure out what is going on with the car. Seems to lack power up high and boost doesn't seem that strong (all over - although from about 3.5k-5k it feels okay)

smoke test ftw to confirm leaks etc

I would defo be checking all the pipes for any leaks as a first port of call.
