Since I brought my A3 the button has done nothing, and there is no light on the dash to indicate that my car has it, it only has ESC light when the ignition is on... So I'm thinking either the last owner has disabled it somehow or some connection isn't right?

ESP is on by default and it only shows the light when you are losing grip or if you switch it off, i would assume it is working but you are unable to switch it off for some reason.

The ESP itself doesn't work, and no light comes on to even say it's working or its recognised on the cars computer, I've deliberately put the car into wheel spins and skids to test it out and I get no feedback from the ESP also told that the esp button light should flash when it's working

Brad, perhaps it's time for a good VCDS scan. The ESP relies on four transducers, one for each wheel, to detect and correct skids, wheel spins and such. Lack of one of more of your wheel inputs may have turned off this important feature. VCDS should, I would have thought, highlighted any problems like this. Good luck.

Yeah I think it's best for me to book a scan in :) do you know if there are any DIY ways you can check if it's in order?

Brad we have a vcds user map with members in different areas that will do scans for others usually for beer tokens. The link to the map is in my signature. I have listed a member below, i dont know how close or far he is from you as you have listed staffordshire as your location. May be worth a try instead of paying stealers price for scan, good luck. :) x

Have you got a button on the dash under the stereo head unit labelled ASR or ESP? If you do, start the engine & hold the button for 10 seconds, the display on the centre of the dash clocks should say ASR/ESP OFF, then press the button for a couple of seconds & the display will then say it's turned back on.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure ESP takes readings from each wheel, steering sensors and various movement axis 'G' sensors to work out if it's needed to try and correct (apply brakes to various wheels)

On a simple press of the ESP button you can override this partially, I think it still sets in in extreme cases and you should get ESP to light on the dash. On wheel spin the ESP will flash and it will apply brake to the wheel(s) spinning faster than the others.

If none of this happens, you have a problem and the only way to find out what's wrong will be to scan the car with VCDS or at a dealers/garage

I would think you should have a warning light on dash to say it's not working though, be it ESP light, MIL light or even the yellow/red steering wheel light?

Boon, no that's the worrying thing, no light at all, abs light is on no esp :(

No light at all or the abs light is on, I'm confused?!

If the abs light is on there is your fault indicator that there is a problem and ESP will not work... You need to get it scanned to find the fault, likely to be an abs ring or sensor but as said above there are multiple systems that link into abs/ESP so you'll never know till it's plugged in to a computer/scanner

Boon, when I turn ignition, the abs works fine, I was just thinking because don't the esp and abs work together? Or something like that, but I've never ever had a esp light even on startup

Ah ok..

You should get the ESP light for 2 seconds when the ignition is switched on (to show that the light works)
.. It will flash to indicate that ESP is counteracting an unsuitable driving condition
... It will light up continuously if there is a malfunction in the ESP (so if there was a fault it should be lit)
.... It will light up continuously if the ESP is switched off (with the button on the centre dash)
..... It will also light up if a fault in the ABS as they operate in conjunction with ESP

A scan is needed... If nothing comes back on the scan then maybe the led light in the dash has packed up, but you still shouldn't be able to wheel spin the car without it intervening unless you have turned it off with the switch first

If the led has blown it won't be an easy fix as changing a bulb, they are smd's direct on the dash's pcb. Best bet would be an auto electrician or a radio/TV repair specialist if it's not something you can do of course!
