Backbox Exhaust removal 1.8L

Hi,

Just wondering if I need to remove the heat shields to allow the backbox to manoeuvre over the rear axle.
Cars a 1.8 A3 2001. Its the original type straight edged heavy box, not the cheapo oval non-oem replacements.

I have tried already, seems tight as **** to get out, thought it easier to ask
