I am looking to buy a VAGCOM connector for my S3.

What i would like to know is which one to buy? and which software do i need to do AWD22, Haldex output tests. Is this software free or comes with certain connector?.

I'm sorry if this has been posted.

Thanks :)

They the £20 ones? Or the £200+? ones? Can u do haldex tests with it?

Not a pro on this but the £20 cable will only do a limited amount of stuff where the £200 ones will do everythin. If u contact NHN on here he sells the genuine cable. Hopefully gona get one myself In The nxt couple of weeks.

A registered version of VCDS will do all the tests the VAG stuff does IIRC but not really done much beyond the engine... can't speak for the lite version and cheap leads as I have never used one...

Useful guide if you are stuckk

Whats up with the haldex?

Since having the s3 it's had on-off haldex problems. It seems to be being held back like stuck? Then sometimes releases itself and it's perfect. The 4x4 works on the car now that I've cleaned the cable under the exhaust. But the car sometimes gets the ESP (triangle) light on. Seems it's always 4x4. feels sluggish when the light comes on like bogged down at lower rpms. Until I restart the car it's ok again. Then will randomly come back on. It's not storing any fault codes for haldex. Only code I had was 01324 - Control Module for All Wheel Drive (J492) No Communication. That was cleared when I cleaned the cables. It's use to be always fwd when I went over 15mph.

Well it could help... But when I got the car the light on the cluster was masked by previous owner. Which makes me think it could be something more...

i bought a ebay "vag com" lead. spend ages trying to get it to talk to the car. but with no luck. i got access to a ross tech hex-can+usb lead. great bit of kit can view pretty much every bit of engine info

well worth it IMO. its next on my to buy list

Have you actually scanned for faults yet? the ESP light coming on isnt always due to the 4wd system... it can come on with other faults such as MAF etc...

Yeah it was scanned. Only fault code was 00812 - BRAKE PRESSURE SOLENOID TRIP SWITCH - F84 SPORADIC. plus it's got a brand new maf on it.

Was it scanned with VCDS though? not all generic readers pick up on VAG protocols and fault codes... if you haven't yet get it scanned using VCDS as stuff has been missed in the past..

No it was just a normal fault code reader not VCDS. I have been told by Audi specialist Glasgow that they recon it's haldex ecu or wiring. the other fault code requires a new brake servo he says. When I first got the car it wheel spun. Seen the clocks were covered. Got the car checked for faults. Said no communication to J492. Checked up on internet what it could be. wiring/haldex ecu/pre charge pump. I cleaned the wiring (connector at exhaust) code went away. Had 4x4 :) Came back on intermittently when launched hard or round some corners. Now it's throwing the light again (I can instantly feel the change) like a slight jerk before it comes on with a slump in performance like it's being dragged. Turn the car off drive away all is fine again. But hiccups at times which it's always done. Feels like it's gripping something very quickly then letting go... This is mostly noticed going up hills. I've seen the light flicker on some hills under normal acceleration.

With yah... have you checked the earth strap? there is a braided strap somewhere in the vicinity of the rear subframe (can't remember where) that can corrode and may be giving you these issues...

So I need to buy the expensive software to try haldex tests?

Dunno tbh mate... never tried it...

See here for differences...

Ross-Tech: VCDS: Function Table

tbh its worth every penny if you are an avid DIY'r and home mechanic... you can buy a licence for the lite version for $99 to go with your ebay cable but it will be tied to that computer whereas the official lead acts as a dongle so can be used on any computer

If the brake pedal switch is faulty it will bring the ESP light up on the dash it will also stop your brake lights working.

I have the full Vag-Com cable and its paid for itself many times over the amount i have used it and by helping solve any issues that i would of had to pay someone else to diagnose. Also very useful during retrofitting stuff as you need to code some bits.

If i remember rightly though when i scan my car using the auto scan function it doesnt talk to the Haldex as its not supported on these cars.

Had the car up on the ramps at my brothers garage. Put it into 2nd gear all four wheels spun thought great atleast I can see it working. Also while under the car my brother again checked the cable. The connectors were a little green in colour he said but he cleaned them put electrical cleaner in it and even went to the extent Of putting a cover over the connectors. (Little sealed bag) help stop it getting wet if it is that. While under there he said whats this bubbling? It was a little hose hidden near the wheel arch. It looked like a breather pipe for the haldex. It was full of black oil and was blocked. Cleaned it with air compressor put it back on. I then went a spirited drive let's say :p made sure I was on mud.... Gravel anything so all wheels would spin. Which it does perfectly with ESP off. I'm not sure the car is reacting the way is should still... Defiantly a little hesitant while driving away at normal speeds. Like is holding on then let's go. Then it's fine when up at normal speeds. When the ESP does come on it's own and won't go off which it has not today since being checked again. The whole car feels like it's dragging it's rear.

I had this on/off problem. Got haldex oil and filter service done, never had it since!! Solved my issue. Sometimes the lateral sensor for ESP can become naff called the G200 sensor, aren't cheap though

Like I said on post 8 I'd definately recomend a oil and filter change on the haldex, if the old oil is old then it will cause problems and changing it very often solves them, for the sake of £20-£30 quid it's definately worth doing as a starting point. if that does not sort it then buy or get someone local to scan for you with VAGCOM and that may well point you closer to the problem

Thanks for all the replies :) I will change the oil and filter cant go wrong :) I bought a vag com cable and will use that to check the car :)

Plus I noticed yesterday having two fault codes on my S3 the other code is 00812 - BRAKE PRESSURE SPORADIC: SOLENOID TRIP SWITCH-F84 which I've always known about also causes ESP light to come on!!! so half the time it could of just been that.

But doing research on that error that also could be related to haldex sensors yaw and acceleration... Brake pedal... rear lights not going on or the whole brake servo. I'm just sick to my back teeth of could be this could be that. I need the correct equipment to check and test the car properly. I don't know if that error could be related to why my car at times feels locked at the rear maybe the brakes are holding on? Anyway...

Thanks for your help. :)
