Hey folks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I just thought I'd post an account of my A3's day-out at Preston Audi today, as there's one part in particular of the story I was hoping to get some opinions on...
Some of you might be aware that I've been throwing a fair bit of time and cash at my car lately, finishing off some bits and pieces, and also having some problems fixed.
I picked it up from a local independant at closing time on New Year's Eve after having one caliper, two discs, and four pads replaced; and when bringing it around from the parking at the back of the garage to the forecourt I noticed a bit of a rubbing sound coming from the corner with the new caliper. I mentioned this to the departing staff (already guessing it was probably futile), and they passed it off with the "they're new brakes, keep an eye on it and ring us if you have any problems" bit (but hey, everyone should party NYE, which I understand).
So having had a successful day here yesterday (I finally fixed my b%£*^$d alarm! (and made it beep when I lock it) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) the day dawned when the 12 month inspection/service came along, and I added the noise from the driver's corner (presumably brake) to the list of other things I was going to have Preston Audi investigate...
My Dad picked it up tonight, and between the invoice and some verbal-relay from my old-man, an interesting chapter unfolded...

Well, what can you say about that? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif ... Nice price. I think I'll be getting my mits dirty and doing that one myself!

WOAH! HHHHAAANG ON A SECOND!!!
The wheels? As in, the things in each corner with tyres on? - Are rubbing against the pads? What pads? The brake pads? ...Really???
At first thought (and OK I'm no certified vehicle-technician) the physics of that blows my mind - what shape are the inside of my Avus rims so that they can rub on my comparitavely-soft brake pads but not be smashed to pieces by the caliper and all manner of other large metal objects in that area? I'm sure there was plenty of clearance everywhere when I fitted them (given that everything in the arch is considerably smaller than on an S3), whatever could've happened?
Seriously though... Can any of you guys make any sense of the waffle on the invoice? Further handwritten notes (by the chap who investigated (seemingly not our friend Adam)) on the "Additional Work" sheet from the Workshop read "Noise on Car is wrong Alloys fitted to Car" - I was pretty surprised to read that.
Am I going nuts? Is there an actual incompatibility between the Avus rims from an S3 and an A3? Or has someone at Preston Audi been sniffing glue?
I'm extremely interested in peoples' opinions regarding that last one; because it really surprised me... What do you think?
Anyway, at least she's back with 12 months on the service book, 12 months on the MOT, a working alarm /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif, a clean throttle-body, and a solution (although not in place yet) to the coolant-mystery. I'm just getting a bit wound-up by this issue with the brakes, but *touch wood* I'll get to the bottom of that before long.
Thanks and regards,
Rob.
