Hi all,

Got a problem with my 98 A3 1.9 diesel.

After digging it out of the snow today and being pleasantly surprised how well it drove in the snow, I lost 1st, 2nd and reverse gear !

I pulled over to have a look under the bonnet and notice the plastic end on one of the gear selector cables had snapped off.

The cable and ball on the end seem fine, can you get the plastic bit anywhere on its own ?

If I do need to change the whole cable, how hard is it to do ? And could anyone tell me the part number I need in either case ?

Many thanks guys.

Ok,

I have managed to remove the broken plastic piece from the end of the cable and can see that a new one can be fitted without replacing the cable. The plastic part that broke also has a long pin that goes through part of the gear selector assembly.
Does this info help ??

Found the answer, VW part number is 1J0 711 256.

Been to 1 Audi Dealer, 1 VW dealer and rang two others, earliest deleivery 7-10 days :-(

There's a guy on ebay selling them, I bought one about 3 weeks ago off him. Genuine part cost about £12
