£1500 To Spend... What Do I Get..

Prawn said:
yup, the calipers and hoses dont change, you dont even HAVE to bleed the brakes. the pads are bought normally for your car, theyre £135.

get teh grooved only discs, drilled discs are bad.

Hi, thanks for the answer, I have another question.

Why are we keeping the same pad and don't use the s3 pad on the larger disc ?
I know that in order to use the pad of the S3 we might need to change more parts. It's only because of this the extra cost ?

I see your concern, but fear not, you are already using S3 pads!

The S3 calliper and the A3 calliper are identical, they are the same part. As a result, the S3 pad and the A3 pad are also one and the same.

The only difference between S3 front brakes and A3 front brakes is the disc size.

The A3 uses a single 54mm piston in a sliding calliper, mated to the hub via a carrier, which allows the use of a 288x25mm vented disc.

The S3 uses exactly the same 54mm single piston sliding calliper, mated to the hub via a slightly different carrier, which mounts the calliper 12mm further away from the hub radially when compared to the A3 carrier. This 12mm increase in radius leads to a 24mm increase in the disc diameter required. So, the same calliper will now work with a 312x25mm disc.

So, as you can see, the only difference between the A3 and S3 brakes is the carrier size, allowing a large disc to be used.

By upgrading to S3 brakes, no hydraulic advantage is gained, because the master cylinder and salve cylinder sizes remain unchanged, but braking power is increased due to the increased leverage of the larger disc, it’s just like using a longer spanner to undo a tight nut.

Does that make a bit more sense? It’s a bit long winded I know, but I like to be thorough!

Just ordered my carriers from VagParts.

Now I only have to wait a couple of day to receive them!
After this I'll get the discs and the pads, I'm really interested on the result
of this modification!

I just fitted a set of EBC grooved discs with EBC Red stuff. These were recommended by EBC so, I went with them. The car does stop better, but I would have thought it better! I have done many brakes jobs myself before, but this time let a local Audi Specialist do it. They are pretty good; however they didn't fitt any braided hoses .....? Anyhow I now wonder if the Black Dia and DS 2500 combo would ahve been better. Still I thin I should have just gone the full brembo route, live and learn.

EBC would only recommend their own products though surely???
The standard S3 brakes are meant to be shocking, thats why everyone upgrades to a brembo or porsche setup

Sorry and i'm sorry if other people feel the same but DPM Autostyling put alot of money into this forum each year to aid to it's running costs so we feel we have a right to advertise and hopefully provide advise and parts for forum members at a very good price.

As for the parts i've mentioned, i personally think all of those would be, and actually have been, on my list before new brakes on the S3 8L as i really don't think the S3's brakes are that bad especially when you compare it to the S3's handling which is shocking as standard!

Once again i apologise if us advertising in post annoys other members.

:sorry:

The kind of advertising you just laid out in this thread is the EXACT reason why I avoid purchasing anything from your company. Ever since you first started doing it, I made a point of never buying anything from you, regardless of price.

You didn't add anything to this thread, you literally just spammed it with crap he didn't need in the attempt to make a buck from him.

Regardless of how much money you put into this website, that kind of marketing is disgusting, and if you were a reputable company, you wouldn't need to do that.

Spam marketing is very shady, and it puts potential customers off.

Bit harsh, the Forge TIP is an awesome upgrade bang for buck and I would rather spend my cash on suspension mods than brakes to start with. I have dealt with DPM if only for a small order and personally I take their posts on board but I dont have to take them as gospel as does anyone else

I'm with Stewart on this one..
My standard brakes lasted under a week...and were swapped for grooved discs and better pads as standard the brakes are verging on dangerous.

Suspension is all well and good..but £1500 is going to go in one go to make it perfect.

If it were my money, I'd sort the brakes, and have a 4 wheel alignment done with aggressive settings (and play with the tyre pressures for free) then start saving for some 'real' suspension work.

Perhaps the Brembo jr kit, replace any worn standard bushes and the alignment...and bank £300 in change.

Or, if you are feeling brave, do the brakes and add the adjustable rear tie bars, then dial in some aggressive geometry and enjoy driving it...whilst you save up for springs/dampers.

An uprated DV I can agree with...if it's mapped - if not just fit a latest type Bosch replacement and leave it be - but since you are getting a re-map, go with a known good quality replacement aftermarket item.

I'd not bother with a FMIC until you are really cranking the boost up...so save your money there.

The TIP gave me no extra power, despite some claiming maracles (dyno proven) so if you aren't suffering with collapsing hoses, save your cash....in fact if you aren't going to be running 1.8+ bar of boost, I'd not bother with uprated boost hoses either - you don't need them.
Of course, if you want to spend the cash on bling, go ahead.

Out of curiosity, did you find the big brakes affected your handling?

I'm still looing into it at the moment but judging from the posts on here I'm worried about the extra unsprung the GT kit would add.

Not really no.
Callipers are lighter, discs heavier..all in all similar total unsprung weight.

Running light-ish wheels helps as you lose some of the gyroscope effect of heavy wheels...but if you run decent springs/dampers, the change to Brembos makes little difference - none I could detect anyway.

I see, good to know...

I was almost going off the idea :)

I do notice a slight difference with the big wheels on, & don't want to add to that, but after all its only ever going to see road use (I think) so guessing it won't be a prob...

If only i could get those wheels in 18s!

S4Quatt

Found anywhere with decent prices on the GT kit yet? Best i found was 940.

Maybe we could get a deal if both of us get them at the same time?

Cheers

Well the best i've found price wise was here at MSW:

http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/frame-detail.asp?PAGE=/manranges.asp

893 sounds better to me...

I dont hold out much hope of getting anything better from them as I've mailed them twice about a couple of things & got no reply.

You never know though if you called then maybe they could work a deal, but it looks to me as if they are such a big company they wont bother...

See what you think
:)

Never heard of Ksport before...

Think I'll stick with Brembo's... Tried & tested!

& 8 Pots? I reckon you'll loose all pedal feel on them.

Could be wrong tho.

Says you can oder them in drilled or grooved, Any preference?

I'll be ordering them up the day i get back from my hols :)

J

Still Undcided there, I prefer the look of the drilled, but assume the grooved will be less likely to warp?

Ideas anyone?

Grooved as less likely to crack, as drilled discs tend to crack around the holes

You'd better hope that their one and only UK distributer stays in business when you need to replace any discs or pads.

Good point, I spoke to them about that and you can use off the shelf pads but do require the AP 330mm discs as a direct replacement....however trying to locate the AP 330mm disc on their own has proven interesting. Though they are happy to cut a deal should you wish to purchase a second set at time of ordering. Still good point cheers ChrisS3

If the replacement option is AP discs, then you might find that the Brembos are cheaper in the long run.

When I replaced the ECS discs on the car it was a ballache. My fault really as I wanted them pre-mounted on nice new hats (for the bling factor). Took about 4 months to get them.
