hi guys and gals

Iv got my 08 Audi s3 8p booked in for a custom stage 1 remap on Friday and just had a few question.
First off the car is high mileage with 97,000 miles on the clock, do you think this will still be safe to map? Also is there any parts I should look to get serviced/changed to save any problems ( was thinking about oil pick up lines) car was fully serviced including Haldex about 1200 miles ago. I have an uprated clutch already, had the cam belt and water pump changed 8,000 miles ago. I also just recently replaced the cam chain and tensioner. Is there anything else I should consider doing?

Sounds like you’re good to go although it might be worth changing the HPFP cam follower for the sake of 50 odd quid and half an hour’s work? Enjoy your remap, the best pound for pound modification there is....

Stage 1 will increase up by less than 20% so no real stress these engines a bullet proof if regularly looked after, oil changes etc, oil pick up pipe worth doing tho

hi Jon

I’m a bit of a noob when it comes to car, I take it all cars have a hpfp and you upgrade it when you stage 2, wasn’t sure if maybe it was just a standard fuel pump and not a hpfp, will have a look at the cam follower regardless,

Thanks mate. Puts my mind at ease, was planning on getting oil pick up done on next service, do you think that the map will put more strain on it? Should I do it now or wait

Yes mate they all gave HPFPs, you upgrade the internals for Stage 2+ but the cam followers are wear parts. I changed mine at around 65000 miles but I’ve no idea when or if it had been changed before.

I upgraded to Autotech internals and RS4 FPRV for my Stage 2 map but it isn’t absolutely necessary.

If you have at least a downpipe in addition to the internals and the RS4 valve you will be at stage 2+.
If the fuel pump is upgraded on its own and nothing else is changed, you can have a custom stage 1+ that will give you more torque than a stage 1.

I've never understood the obsession with stages. Mod it and map it to suit those mods. Not every power mod you can do fits into the magical stage lists.

I completely agree with this, I have the full exhaust, intake, fuel pump internals and return valve with an uprated clutch but my tuner doesn’t do Stage 2+. It was tuned on a 4WD dyno to suit and I’m delighted with results as I knew I would be as I’ve been going to them for years. People are overly obsessed with numbers too, which to me is missing the point??

I think it stems from off the shelf maps like apr, revo etc...

If you go for a custom tune then you can fit whatever you want within reason.

Also, there's no gains from fitting an rs4 valve or hpfp unless you get it mapped to increase the rail pressure. Might be stating the obvious to seasoned S3 owners, but noobs might not realise this.

I can imagine your thoughts on the 5mm hole modification then??

I had did the 5mm mod to mine before taking to R-tech last year. It had about 120,000 miles on the clock and they sent me home with 317bhp and 5 switchable maps. Not bad for a 12 yr old S3!
They did say that I didn't need the 5mm mod unless I was going stage 2+ but it was too late by then and it hasn't upset how the car runs.
Before getting it done ensure your fuel filter has been replaced (many people overlook it), spark plugs upgraded to iridium plugs, and ensure coil packs are healthy.
DV must be in good condition and revision G (I think) is the recommended part for best boost control.
Cam follower should be checked and replaced ideally if you've never done it.
If you plan to use R-tech for the best custom remap you could ask for, be prepared to run the car on 99ron petrol (Tesco or Shell premium) or you won't make the most from it, and running it on lower fuel later will affect the engine. Keep this extra cost in mind, performance cars prefer performance fuels and oils.
