Is an upgraded intake really worth it?

Been looking at the AWE cold air intake. 4.5 inch pipework, which is the largest available right now. I was also looking at the integrated engineer intake which is 4 inch pipework....seems the IE intake has “proven gains” though unsure how true that really is.

at stage 2 (forge inlet, wagner/forge stage 3 intercooler, BCS decat/100 cell sports cat, panel filter and snow flap removed) would I really see £850-1700 worth of improvement over a stock airbox with the aforementioned snow flap removal mod done? If it’s say 20bhp/20lbft of torque id probably take the used IE intake I have on offer for £850, but can’t really see the £1700 price tag on the AWE?

can anyone prove me wrong? Anyone done stock airbox vs the two intakes above on the same dyno same day?

Got a friend to weld 4” pipe and then just powder coated it.

When did you get your DVX pipe? There are fitment issues with their original design I have just had mine swapped out for their new design which fits perfectly

Ahh you're picking this week then you will be getting the updated version, I bought mine back in december. Yes Geert is a grate guy and sorted it very quickly for me, you're in good hands :icon thumright:
 
£1700 is crazy for an intake, you will get a measurable improvement with a good intake but the question that has never fully been answered is what % of the gain do you get from a DIY or flapper mod + back pipe in comparison. I almost did this with Forge, but didn't get chance to swap in a pipe.

Going from full stock to IE was really significant but not worth it at stage 1 - turbo just works harder to compensate. Only at stage 2 where the turbo is all tapped out does really feel worth it. I'd say at stage 1 just do the back pipe, seeing as you've invested in stage 2 I'd put a decent intake sub 1k on it, whether it's 'worth it' is personal. I've seen some good results with stock box + mods so for a few hundred that is best bang-buck, but I broke that rule by going stage 2 in the first place so may as well finish the picture :)
 
It's said by most tuners you really can't feel a gain of less than 10hp to the wheels in the "seat of the pants". An Intake at stage 1 won't really be noticeable, but the sound of the turbo and waste gate might be placebo enough for many to feel it was worthwhile. It's a shame there's no plastic intake systems, these £1400 carbon fibre jobs are mostly bling factory and its so unnecessary. I think a manufacturer the offers an affordable alternative in plastic would sell way more.

Yep, data logging and back-to-back dragy is the order of the day for me. The first time I ran ethanol it felt so much different - really smooth, less laggy, but not really faster (what's wrong...) - checked data and just that first pull was 0.3 faster on 0-60 and 100-200 than I'd ever been before. I struggle to notice 30hp by the seat of my pants, change in power delivery is more noticeable but doesn't mean faster to us lesser mortals!

I've heard alot of justification that the tooling for small runs for plastic doesn't make a significant cost saving, so better to have a one-size-fits-all for a small and still appeals to the bling boys. I understand that logic but HG managed to produce one in plastic 200EURO cheaper than the CF item. That said it appears to be NLA, now only selling carbon, maybe that proves the point... I wouldn't spend the money being asked, I picked up my IE in the US whilst on holiday. It's a bitch to fit in a suitcase.
