Hi, I’m new here, I’m on my fourth audi, audi 80 my first, TT second, A4 avant and now the A6 allroad. Had other cars but seem to come back to Audi’s........

Right I’m here because I’ve got an issue with my headlights, they are the basic halogen lights, no LED, no xenon, just basic.
It started with a bulb failure, front left, I take the bulb out to inspect it to check I was replacing the correct bulb, the bulb looked fine, put it back and all seemed ok, no warning, headlight came on....... that lasted a a few days then both lights decided not to work, warning for both on !!!! I got home turned lights off and they came on!!!! But only headlight, very strange. Turn lights on and they go off leaving only side lights and rear light on and warning the both bulbs have gone which the clearly haven’t because when I turn the lights off, they come on!!!!

Can anyone help on where to start with a problem like this please?

My A6 has halogen lights and my first questions are you speaking about the dip beam or the main beam lights and does the dash indicate which light has failed?

Dipped beam are H7 55w bulbs, main beam are H15 55/15w bulbs. The 15w side of the bulb is for daytime running lights.

My only suggestion to begin with is to check the connections at the bulb and if possible the earths.

Hi John,
Thanks for your reply. It looks like it’s my misunderstanding of the headlight system on my car, would I be correct to assume that when I turn my lights off it’s the daytime running lights that come on? If so then it’s the H7 dipped beam bulbs that have actually blown and nothing is wrong with my lights at all.....

Outer bulbs are the dipped beams and are accessed through the wheel arch flap. Easy to access with the wheel on full lock. The instructions in the handbook are clear.
