Hi Guys, Airbag light came on the other day..

Does anyone know what sensor this is and where it is located?

Also why is there two of "
Crash sensor for side airbag; front passenger side: "
should one not say front drivers side?

Any help appreciated

Might want to put this in the Vcd's section where you might get better advice

its in the engine compartment on the right side of the radiator. its square and has a black/yellow color. make sure its connected right and scan again , then remove it and connect it to the passenger side and take the passenger side and connect it to the drivers side and rescan. if the error comes back on the passenger side then the sensor needs replacement. If the drivers side has the error then its the wiring

Hi,

I have the exact same problem on my A3.
Before I attempt the swap over, do I need to disconnect the battery ?
Just a bit paranoid about the air bags deploying.

Thank you,

Hi mate,

No idea I've still not got round to doing mine, as scared of removing it aswell haha.

I'll try find out for you

No worries Buddy.

I decided to grasp the nettle and just did it.

Unfortunately for me, the problem seems to be the wiring loom as when I swapped the sensors over, cleared the existing error code down & re-scanned, I still had the same error being returned.

Checked the wiring that is visible & I can't see anything obvious.

Auto electrician then tomorrow...... as I'm certainly not brave enough to stick the multi meter probes across the connections!!

Cheers

Your brave!!

Did you unplug the battery??

Hopefully it's not to exspensive for you mate, a new sensor would of been alot easier!

No, I left the battery connected.

Typical, that's just my luck about it not being an easy fix, but I'll get a second opinion on the problem.

I'll post the outcome here when I know what is along with the fix.....and probably a few tears as well.

Cheers,

Im going to try and swap mine over tonight, knowing my luck it wont be the sensor either :(

Cheers mate if you could, would be handy :)

Thanks,

Hi Folks,

Just a quick update, I’ve now finally managed to clear my air bag warning light issue (as stated above).
Ultimately, I think it was just a connection issue, but I couldn’t see anything obvious…..And after trying the sensor swap over as previously described in this post, I still annoying had the same error message, implying that it could be wiring loom.
I was going to try an auto electrician, but thought there were other things I could try myself first.

It’s only basic stuff, but if you have this problem following these steps might save you some time and money.

This is process I used to resolved my air bag warning light issue:

· Grab a can of electrical contact cleaner (I used Tectane Contact Cleaner £2.51 from Toolstation……Other brands & retailers are available.)
· Disconnect the battery – Then go & make a brew and wait for a least 10 mins for any residual charge to dissipate.
· Disconnect the Yellow electrical connectors from the two front crash sensors.
· Un-bolt and remove the two crash sensors from the car.
· Spray liberal amounts of the contact cleaner onto the electric contacts of sensors and leave to dry.
· Spray liberal amounts of the contact cleaner onto the Yellow connector plugs on the car and leave to dry.
· Dry the sensors with compressed air from an air-line. (If you don’t have access to an air-line, then a can of compressed air should do the same job).
· Dry the Yellow connectors with the air-line, which should also help to blow out any dirt in the connector plug.
· Re-bolt the sensors on to the car, re-connect the Yellow plugs (wiggle them as you put them on to help clean the contact surfaces) and reconnect the battery.
· Start the car: You will see the air bag light is still on and you will have ESP & Steering warning lights now as well as a result of disconnecting the battery. Drive the car for a few metres and the ESP & Steering wheel warning lights will go out.
· Connect & run VCDS (or other fault code reader), select the air bag module and then clear down the errors.
· Hopefully, the error is now cleared.

Hi,

Final update from me on this one......As my previous post above didn't actually fix the problem in the end.

As the air bag warning light came back on again a couple of day's later.

This time I read the error message properly and although it is exactly the same as the one at the beginning of this post, the error message actually refers to the "drivers side air bag sensor in the door" and not the drivers side front crash sensor under the bonnet.

The up shot is in my case, the error message was actually being caused by a wire in the wiring loom in the rubber boot (between the door & the A pillar) being worn through.

The repair is a bit tricky but can be done, as I have simply soldered in a repair wire between the ends of the broken one and used heat shrinks to cover the solder joints.

As maybe another 4 or even 5 wires were also knicked through to the core in my loom, as a temp fix I have taped these up until I can get a new loom fitted in the next couple of weeks.

I hope this helps someone in the future not to spend hours head scratching and looking under the bonnet....

Hi mate,

Thanks so much for the 2 detailed posts!! No doubt this will help someone in the future!

I swapped my front ones over and it didn't cure it.

So looking at the error message, you are right it's the drivers side door instead!

I'm just going to buy a new sensor as they are only £10 on eBay.

So will fit this and leave a reply back

Thanks

Hi,

No problem mate.

Before you buy a new sensor, I would just open the drivers door, pull back the rubber boot and inspect the wires in the door loom.

I expect you will find a broke wire (the two wires running to the door sensors are brown & yellow which are both really thin in gauge - in my 11 plate car) and if so this will be causing the fault. If you can repair the wire and re-scan with VCDS to clear the error that should sort the problem for you.

The wires breaking in the door loom is a very common problem on A3's.

Hope this helps....

Cheers,
