Hi, 1st time post, real novice when it comes to cars.

I have a 2013 A3 S line, had it for 4 years now. At a service 2 years ago at Audi Dealership they advised of corroded discs and should be changed asap. I waited until a year later until next service but sent it to an independent Called A for Audi which has a brilliant rep. I asked them to change brake discs pads as required if necessary. They handed car back serviced saying just leave them for another year, so I thought fair enough. However I took the car to a local kwik fit type place to get Air Con redone and they left an advisory on the receipt about rear discs being corroded(even though they weren't dealing with that) which got me thinking.

Is this something serious and should I be looking to change asap or at next service? Don't mind replacing if required but at same time don't want to fork out cash for no reason.

Any Help appreciated.

Most Kwik fit type places do free brake checks and it seems a lot of the time they will advise the owner that there is corrosion on the brake discs. Yes brake discs are steel and they do rust. As long as it's not excessive and affecting the operation it's not an issue. If there is an issue thats causing the brake pads to not contact the disc correctly it's more likely a sticking piston in the caliper or the caliper slides are sticking.
A very corroded disc is not the cause of a problem it's the effect of another issue.

Thanks for your response.

Yeah they do seem to be excessively corroded and thats the 3rd time I've been advised about them. As far as I am aware the operation is unaffected? Are there tell tale signs of operation being affected?

I would get them looked at but find a good local independent specialist. They are less likely to rip you off and will do a better job than a generic tyre and brake shop. And will probably be a lot cheaper than the main dealers.
Rear brakes only provide about 25% of the cars stopping power so problems are not so noticed at the rear, however all the handbrake power is on the rear brakes.
"You CAN get much better than a Kwik Fit fitter"

Yeah cheers. Yeah I was only at the kwik fit type place to get air con regassed at quick notice. I've always used a very reputable independent Audi garage for all work on it

here are some pics I've just taken. hope this helps.

cheers

i would say that's time for replacement, or a skim depending on the pitting depth.

Mot and service is due August, alright to hold off until then?

It looks like the rear pads are not making contact with the face of the disk properly. If you wash your car or the rain gets on the disk they will show a sign of rust, this should be removed as you drive by the action of the pad on the disk.

No.

Those are in pretty poor shape and are compromising your braking ability. Getting them skimmed is a waste of time and money, and if you did you'd need new pads anyway.

Get the discs and. pads replaced asap and ask whoever does it to check the calipers for free movement.

It's not terribly helpful to say that they should have been done when you were first alerted to the issue, but that's what I'd have done if I were you.

Ok, fair enough, I've got the car booked in for 10 days time. Will just get it serviced at same time, kill 2 birds with one stone. Thanks again folks.

Just had mine in for a SatNav update and healthcheck at a main Audi Dealer. They've marked the discs down as needing 'immediate' attention, but in the AudiCam video, the technician says that they're "starting to corrode" - the customer adviser also said that they took the car out to see if they could clean them with rapid braking but they couldn't. Seems as though they're all saying conflicting information.

They said I don't drive aggressively enough :sob:

I've just had the same advisory (well I say advisory but the video I received said they needed changing) while my car is in for a service. They advised that the rear discs were badly corroded and needed replacing at a cost of £452. My reply was of course they're corroded my car has been sat in your compound for the last 9 weeks waiting for you to get a part for it. I then explained the car had only done 5k miles so it's either a warranty claim or they're replacing them free of charge. Apparently they will clean up fine now! :)

Sorry to say your's look like they've had it. Euro car parts have an offer on brakes at the moment and new brembo discs and pads for my S3 were £91. Should be doable yourself if your up to it, but if not at least you'll have an idea of what a reasonable cost should be. :)

No I'm not up to these kind of jobs unfortunately. I was quoted £260 from the independent Audi specialist I use but they use Audi parts

That's not too bad then and at least you know they'll be done right. Much better than the £452 I was quoted. :)

I had the same issues with the rear disks they were three years old photo attached. The rusting/scoring was definitely effecting brake performance. I would get them changed ASAP. I had all four corners done and fluid changed as brakes were getting spongey.

It amazes me that people still use kwit fit, especially those with half decent cars.

I would take a £200 sh!tter to them for anything, let alone a fairly new Audi.

What do I know?

it was only to get a hassle free air con recharge whilst the UK is finally experiencing some hot weather. The heater will be back on next month no doubt.

If you're going to change the discs, then I'd have new guards fitted while you're at it. Yours look awful.
