2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

congrats, you've probably just put a load of needless stress and wear on other components.

As luck had it, a different car became available for sale, so I got shot of the pile of ****.

At the time, I would have been happy if one of the technicians accidentally dropped their lit cigarette but down the fuel pipe. I did suggest to the sales manager that he could do us all a favour by taking the car around the back and torch it. That’s how peed off I was with AUK and the car.

Most unreliable car I have ever owned.

if that was how you were driving it, i'm not surprised.

If only. I wouldn’t have been less disappointed with the car if I did drive it like that all the time.

I received multiple £1000 bills for things going wrong way before the engine issue. The timing chain failed within the first year of ownership. Luckily at the lights otherwise that would have resulted in a new engine! The last straw was 4 new shock absorbers a month after having the engine rebuild.

My wife wasn’t happy I bought it in the first place because of all the problems I had with my previous B6, but the issues pailed into insignificance compared to the B8.

So 600 miles done. It's booked in for second test. Reader says there's quarter oil left.

That's not right surely.

Anything over 0.5l per @620 miles is excessive, so no.

You didn't buy it from an Independent dealer in Guildford, did you?

No an independent from Birmingham. I have made them aware of the issue, as the warranty runs out end of April.

Whether the warranty runs out in 3 months or not you are covered for 6 months under Consumers Act. I always pay a small amount from credit card as well as it further ensures you are covered incase something happens. I bought an A4 1.8t from Guildford and returned the car after 7 weeks as it had too many problems. And it was a 60 plate with only 49k miles on the clock with 1 owner. Not worth the hassle mate.

Audi are going to do the work FOC. Failed the test. Needs pistons and rods replacing. Will take upto a week.

Does anyone know what parts are used when the pistons/rods etc are replaced? Are they an updated version of what was previously fitted or are they of a better spec like what’s found in the S3 etc?

Cheers

Ive just purchased second had s4 2011 b.8 and its burning through oil! Oil gauge states its gone through one third in 100 miles?!?! WTF. Thankfully it has Audi extended warranty in place.
I will be making a call on Tuesday.

Any advice would be appreciated

Andy

After reading through the first 10 pages I've eventually decided on a course of action for what I think will turn out to be the much dreaded confirmation that my 11 plate A4 Avant 1.8TFSi has an excessive oil consumption rate. I bought it from a VW Specialist in 2013 but have FASH.

So contacted Audi UK Customer and asked for guidance after reading this was a known issue, a rather coy response from the customer services team who are "aware of this type of issue but it requires the oil consumption diagnostic at your local dealer".

Asked if I would be charged for the oil consumption diagnostic - yes if it is no using excessive oil, otherwise no.

Asked what would happen if it was an issue and was advised the dealership and Audi UK would handle it after that - didn't press to much on that front.

So got them to confirm my local dealership that they wanted me to take it to........ roll on opening time in the service department next week.

I'm hoping that this doesn't turn out to be to arduous as the rate of consumption has dramtically changed in the last few months and I reckon I'm lucky to be getting 400 miles /litre (currently has 58k but only running at around 8k miles per year and mainly in town). Tailpipe also should have been a giveaway for me.

I emailed the CEO and got a response from a named person saying they will look after my case. Fingers crossed all goes smoothly

Just book in with your local Audi dealer. Book in an oil consumption test. It is free.

Then you have to drive 600 miles. They will then tell you if it passed or failed.

I have full audi service history apart from the last service where it was done by an indy. All they wanted was a copy of the invoice.

Audi Swindon have been superb for me.

I drive about 30 miles a week so a 600 mile drive will take 6 months. Sod that, they need to be doing a 150 mile test

Not sure if anyone has had this issue

Our 2011 has failed stage 2 and is in need of the engine work to resolve the consumption issue

The car is Revo stage 2 and has been picked up by the dealer as such. Looking at the car it’s fairly obvious it’s been played with

My question is, has anyone had any luck with Audi CS getting a contribution for repairs even after remap?

Whilst I appreciate the car is not standard, the known issue would be there with or without the remap, and therefore in my opinion should be covered. The car has full service history (not all Audi bit completed and documented as per Audi requirements)

Would appreciate any info on cases that may support my claim

Although it’s a known issue, they can probably get away with not doing anything for free due to the modifications you have, mods invalidate warranty for any relevant parts, so if anything impacting how the engine works, they’ll no doubt use that to deny payment.

Which engine was this for?

Just bought a 09 a5 last week. Wishing I'd done more research now. Hoping audi sort this for me as had to fill the oil twice already in 350 miles or so

So just spoke to audi Cardiff and they've told me that Audi won't cover any costs of repairs and that there's no known issues. Any advice for this please guys?

First thing first, get the car booked in with your local Audi for oil consumption test and find out the results. If I was you I wouldn't top-up any more oil between now and the test date.

If the test result show there is an issue call Audi Customer Sevice UK and explain the whole situation and I am sure you'll have a positive outcome.

Oh, and if your local Audi is a pain, just show them this:

Yeah audi UK being a big help to be fair to them just seems to have been 1 person in Cardiff audi who didn't understand the issue. Just waiting for it to be booked in for the usage test now

Audi have confirmed its not the dreaded oil consumption but more to do with a cover needing to be replaced. I don't quite get it as he spoke to fast however its all covered on the warranty. They are doing an update on the ECU as well.

Once its back i will then get it mapped. thanks god i didn't have it mapped prior to it going in!

That's good news buddy. . Rocker cover gasket is not an expensive component to replace and has found to be a problem on 1.8T. I wasn't aware it will be on S4s as well. Keep us posted and fingers crossed.

They are stating £930 for a modified venitlation cover. They are now saying that the warranty dept are advising it may not be covered even though I have comprehensive warranty. haha. Its not an oil leal ***. i am waiting for their response before i let them know that A. Why does it need to be a modified cover when the original one clearly isn't up to standard and thus FAILED. They should never have installed it when they made the car and B. I am covered for "mechanical failure"

Audi have now agreed to cover the cost under warranty and reckon it will take circa 5 hours to do.
What a palava!

So i have the car back and will take it for a "good " drive tomorrow. They carried out a software update and replaced the ventilation cover under warranty. Fingers crossed

What kind of mileage are people getting on these tests before having to go back to audi? I'm 170 miles in and already showing half the oil used on the mmi so can't see mine getting anywhere near the 620 miles.

I dropped mine off today for the Oil Consumption test, when I took it in the light had just come on and I'd done 263 miles from the last 1 litre top up. I'll be interested to see what I get, it went somewhat unnoticed as my wife mainly drives the car and it only does about 400 miles/month so since I've twigged to this in March I reckon the most I've had is 430 miles.

So local Audi dealer's have been pretty helpful so far however waiting to see the outcome of the test as a couple of inconsistencies with what I've read here.

Essentially said this is the Stage 1 test, they checked around the car and no issues other than replacement front suspension bushes. Got the car back with the drive 621 miles or until the light comes on. Said I fully expect the light to come on so they said if that happens contact us straight away. I was there was a stage 2 but no detail on what each entailed - didn't probe too much on it.

The interesting part was that I was told that if the piston rings were the issue Audi UK would determine the next steps whereas the previous information here is that dealers are fully approved to authorise the work - unless I've picked something up wrong.

Asked if they'd had many in and they said I was the first one for a while, there had been a few a couple years back. They did at least acknowledge the "potential" ring / piston / con-rod replacement work early in the conversation.

Cool that's roughly around what I think I'll get so that's ok then I was worried it was using the oil too fast if anything if that makes any sense. So far audi have been good but until it's in the garage getting fixed free of charge inwont 100% believe they're going to do it.

My conversation with them was very similar
