Starting to plan Car after S3

20% off a Merc SLC 43 brings it in at Ca.£39K and is very tempting

That’s very nice, the back could be a bit more aggressive but really like the front.

But the inside isn't the best!!!

Does seem a few buttons! Hate so many buttons on the wheel also, when I had the Golf GTD I was trying to figure out how to use cruise control with all those buttons, I struggled a bit... !

No too right, They must of seen them in the newer A4 and thought how naff they look. :welcoming::welcoming::welcoming::welcoming:

I am in a similar boat, I went to my local Mercedes dealership after i found i couldn't spec up an A45 on the website anymore, there is a reason for this, you can't get them anymore, and they don't know when the new one is due.

I don't want to get anything slower than the S3, but it also has to have 4 doors and 5 seats, and i don't want a rear wheel drive only car. Seems its a bit of a wasteland once you get to 40K+

Has possibly something to do with the fact the S3 actually fits my requirements perfectly, and to be honest as a bar to measure everything else by, is a pretty high one.

I think Mercedes are also producing an S3 rival soon along with the latest gen A45 to compete with the RS3, will be interesting what power they come with.

Now this is a nice Merc!!! TRH is on here

Glad I wasn't the only one. They do make it very complicated on the Golf. Much prefer the Audi set-up.

Yeah, the concept looks great. But I doubt it'll look anything like the concept once production ready.

Think they need to drop the 4Pot for the AMG version though

It’s not hideous Jassy.... I would also prefer an M5 but if an E63 was dropped on my door step I think I could live with it.

Hahaha the scene from Snatch is stuck in my head now.

A friend of mine had M6 for a while, that gathered pace at an alarming rate.

.....for me I think pre-FL S3 to FL RS3 or TTS/RS is the only way to go within Audi....S4 looks too big and seems more old man-ish and is not much bigger inside than S3....S5 sportback maybe....but for same money much prefer RS3/TTRS.....otherwise might have to look at what BM has to offer in xDrive so will be keeping an eye on what's coming out there but their prices here were 20%+ premium on similar Audi's 3 years ago.....
Failing all that maybe something cheaper, more sporty and compact in the SUV market from Japan.....Suburu XV?....Mazda CX3?....
However, after a weeks holiday skiing in US having driven new Ford Explorer Sport and Nissan Pathfinder.....felt great jumping back into my 'old' S3 :)

It's good to have 2 cars to play with. I have an S5 Sportback and a Mercedes SL500, they are very different cars and each one helps to keep me impressed with the other.

Yes I was going to mention the Merc A35 AMG > S3 rival.

That along with a new generation Golf R would all be worthy of consideration agains a new platform S3.

Now if you had mentioned the new BMW 1series in your post, l may not have quoted yer post mate, but a A Class.... Seriously mate it's as bland as bran flakes, a seriously dull looking car if I ever saw one

ha ha lol .... I honestly don't mind the Merc and think it looks ok.

I struggle with BMW - ever since I had a 330i M sport way back in 2006 ... my one & only Bimmer venture.
It had a wonderful straight six engine and lovely gearbox - but I became bored of its looks VERY quickly.
But the big problem was the depreciation - it lost me a packet so I vowed never again.
Switched to Audi in 2008 and been with them ever since.
I do look at some Bimmers & think they look nice but the interiors still look the same to me and are too fussy - whereas Audi's feel modern & stylish.

Audi's still lead the way (IMO) and suit my taste the most.

Have you ever considered a Jag mate, the new E Pace will surely get a SVR designation, l remember the day of my drive back home from getting my voodoo.. And l ended up directly behind a camouflaged F Pace SVR for around 10 minutes it must have been around the Midlands area ... I think? as l was oblivious to where l was driving home lol
Also have you considered a used performance car

SUV's aren't my cup of tea mate - don't need one / too big & bulky for my needs / taste.

Not really into a used performance car - too wary of the cars history and running costs.

I've found the sweetspot with the RS3 to be honest - 5 door / practical / mega quick / reliable / like the brand / understated looks / quattro / soundtrack.

That's why i think a new S3 will fit the bill when it comes out as it will tick all these boxes again with the exception of the soundtrack ... but looks / tech / interior should off-set this and I am fairly confident it won't be much slower than my RS3 as each new generation of S3 goes faster than the last one doesn't it lol :)

I honestly think if Audi introduce a sleeker looking 4 door saloon it should be a looker, l have gone off hatches and will never buy another hatchback again

What you got against hatchbacks lol :)

I love hatches - they just do everything you want them too.

I do like the look of the saloon too - if I were getting a face lift now I would 'maybe' go saloon - but that would be just to be different more than anything else.

But to say you won't have another hatch will restrict you in cars moving forward ... you will have to strike that Focus ST off the list straight away :readit:

Have you seen the new Focus it's just a larger version of the new Fiesta . . So it's well out of contention now

In honesty ... I think I would always lean towards a Golf anyway mate ... GTI or R
Could be interesting to see what the next gen GTi has to offer in terms of BHP with performance pack.
If it's aorund 260 / 270 bhp with 0 to 62 mph circa 5.5 seconds or less, it could be quite a fun car.
As much as I like my quattro, you do feel the weight.
Our 2.0 litre front wheel drive TT only has just over 200 bhp but it go like a rocket.
The 'surge' you get from a front wheel drive car when the turbo kicks in is a great sensation.
Every quattro car I have had - they go like hell, but because they are so planted, the acceleration keeps the car level so you don't feel it as much.
Front wheel drive NOT so good in wet / damp weather though lol :)

agree with the new a35 looks bland but can't **** with a45 they're mad
M140i are great pound for pound they have crazy tourqe considered rsq3

New Focus is definitely worth a look for me as long as poorer residuals don't make them more expensive than Golf/A3.

I made £2k off my Focus ST3, l owed £14,800 on the pcp sold for £17k but saying that it was one of the first used ones on the market and it was fully optioned, but l think it being early to the used market was the reason

Our tick sheets are very similar, although I've not owned an RS car (yet) but I wouldn't rule out a hatch / sportback car.
I do miss the soundtrack of my last car though.
And 4WD / AWD is a must have for me, which narrows the choices down further.
I dislike the looks of the Merc A Class and 1 Series too.
I've looked at used RS3, 4, 5 and 6 but also wary of what their former life has been like.

What about a X3 m340i 355 ponies and has beaten the SQ5 in almost every aspect and its a looker as far as SUV's go

What would be really nice in the next S3 (although it won't happen) is a slightly de-tuned 5 pot - think S4/RS4, S6/RS6. They could easily do it with the S3/RS3
