My 2005 avant is noticeably smokey and the mpg seems to have dropped a few miles recently, are the two related and what could be causing it. I'm no spanner monkey but I am willing to try a few things before taking it to the dealers to get my cc bashed.

How would I be able to find the leak? Is it just a case of looking very carefully at every pipe in the engine bay connected to the intercooler or turbo?

Look for oil patches on the boost hoses. The crankcase ventilation means oil fumes are present in the air in the boost system. So where ever there are leaks there will be oil. Most likely one of the hoses has split.

Thanks chaps I'll have a butchers at the weekend!

You don't say the colour of smoke ?? Black smoke would indicate a boost leak or similar, blue could be unburnt fuel/oil.

Black smoke, although the back of the car does get very sooty and the mpg seems to have dropped, could it be both issues?

I'd look into a boost leak.
Any hissing under acceleration??
As others have pointed out, look for any new oil patches on pipes etc

No hissing that I can make out as it sounds like a tractor!;)ill have a look for a leak somewhere. Thanks for your time responding, it's appreciated .

@b16 will would you know what it means when a 1.9tdi awx engine starts smoking white, I've been told its the turbo gone but have not got any idea how to test it. Any advice would be appreciated cheers gareth

Hey mate. Yes, could well do.
White smoke could be a completely kaput turbo aswell. I'd start by pulling the boost pipe off the compressor & feeling for play in the turbo, if there's lots of up& down play, and oil, don't forget to check/drain the intercoolers.
