Does anyone's 184 actually use any? If so, how much over what mileage from new. In addition, did you treat the car as recommended in the handbook from new or use launch control to exit the dealer's forecourt and continue in that style from day one?

Zero obvious oil consumption after 2.5k miles (184 quattro). And I did follow manufacturers guide on 'running in'... Sort of... (Well I didn't redline it...)

I've done 5K miles and oil level still 80% up the dipstick. Looks like low consumption is pretty normal for this engine, which is a pleasant surprise.
(I ran mine in)

I was 500ml (1/8gl) down in the 1,000kms inspection (here it is free). It´s well known in Peru that german cars and especially VAGs have a rare oil consumption. Audi told me that it is pretty common and maybe i will detect another 500ml down in the 7,500 kms service. Not more than that and it will repeat the same in future services.

500mL sounds like a lot for 1000km!
Any idea what volume of oil is needed to go from bottom to top of the hatched area on the dipstick?

I believe it´s near 18.9 liters (5/4 gallons), but the real question is: did someone check the oil when your new car is in your hands the first day?

So maybe and only maybe some engines are not well filled the first day, so some of us will detect a rare consumption, others not.
I want to believe it´s like that, i will confirm it in my next service.

I've not added any oil to my 184 and I've done around 4000 miles.

Mistake of me in the conversion, it´s 4.73 liters

I would check it were I you. It's easier at your home than on the motorway and that's assuming you carry a bottle with you.

We don't use the Audi much and have only done 3000 miles in it. So far the level hasn't moved from the top of the dipstick hatching.

My interest in the subject is down to reading opinions that a car should be thrashed from day one to get a good seal on the pistons etc. It's a view I've never had any faith in and I have yet to read that advice in any of the handbooks accompanying the many new cars we have purchased.
Instead each car we buy is treated with respect for the first 1500 miles or so before slowly increasing the power output of the engine. This has paid off handsomely for us. Oil use is has always been zero. Engine, gearbox and turbo problems also non-existent. I carry the same bottle of oil I had in the 170 when I bought it in 2007. I've not had to open it yet.
In contrast, second hand cars we had 35 years ago all used oil. This may in part be due to the ancient technology but it may also be down to the way they were treated from new.

I always carry a bottle with me and I think everybody should have a spare.

Still, I've done 15000 miles and never had to refill.

My "low oil" light just came on at around 11,000 miles (17,000km). The car's never been at the dealer since new (long life servicing). I just tipped in a litre bottle of 50700 oil and the indicator's gone out. Fingers crossed it wasn't too much, I didn't look at the dipstick.

Why not? That's why Audi put the hole with the little yellow stick in your engine!

I'd have thought that with a name like "Nerdy Norm" you'd have checked it before every trip! :)

Haha, at the side of the road in the dark, it was all I could do to actually see the oil filler hole :)

I have to say it's the first time I've ever had to add oil in between services to a car I've owned from new (maybe 20 different models from VW, BMW, Porsche, Honda ...), so I was quite surprised when the light came on.
