I wondered if anyone had had an opportunity to compare the difference in fuel consumption between the pre and post 2012 change.

I've only had a post 2013 (63) plate S4 and I'm never getting above 30mpg when doing long journeys and sub 20mpg when driving in the city. The oil crisis it thankfully helping a bit on the petrol bills :)

That sounds worse than I was expecting for a late S4. I used to have an MTM chipped B5 RS4 with I guess 420hp which I should never have sold and from which I used to get 25mpg from overall (my driving conditions are fairly easy, but with the occasional squirt). I was hoping that with an MRC map an S4 (avant) would be similarly quick, but a modern car and with better consumption. If there's no big difference in the pre and post 2012 figures I might as well get an older car and save some some money. The alternative would be a remapped 3.0TDI, but although I'm approaching retirement I didn't want to go that route just yet.

I was also quite surprised as I was hoping for a bit better mpg. If I go 75-80mph on the highway I looking at 30mpg. But that's as good as it get. Going around town is more like 16-18mpg.

I've just changed from a 63 plate bmw 330d and even though the fuel consumption is 50% worse I'm enjoying every second :)

My commute results in 27 & over 30 on longer runs. My 4yr average on my previous Merc C320cdi was 36mpg so on reflection i'm pleasantly surprised with my 2014.

Overall average in the 6 months since new 28 never less than 26 and occasionally just over 30 - reasonable sensible and mostly shell premium fuel.

For a Pre Facelift S-Tronic, My commute which is mostly sat in stop start traffic varies from 14-18mpg. Average longer run is around 25-27mpg, highest I've ever seen was 31.9mpg through many miles of 50mph average speed limit motorway.

2012 facelift avant.

I average 24-27 mpg on a 15-20min A road commute with variable driving.

18ish around town and never less than 30 on reasonable motorway journeys.

Given its a 4WD estate that will hit 60 in sub 5secs I can't complain. I'd like better mpg but it wasn't really a deciding factor in my decision due to low annual mileage.

If fuel economy is a primary decider then it's not the right car :)

Just to say it can be done. Got 33.7 mpg on a 220 mile motorway run last weekend. My average is round about 24 mpg overall. I'm OK with that as I use my car for commuting which is not the best conditions. Mine's a 2014.

There appears overall to be a couple of miles per gallon difference between the models in real life, despite a significant difference in the official figures. No surprises really. Thanks for your replies.

Pre face lift here. 22mpg average (monitored on an app) with daily commute, mainly town/B roads with some A roads. Longer runs (i.e. motorway runs) tend to return 25-28mpg if running with cruise on.

I expect the Facelift to return 2-3mpg above this, due to Start.Stop etc.

The reading is around 24 - 30 depending on the run I've done and did 280 - odd miles between fill up and the warning ping.

Pre-facelift stage 2 car.

Why buy an S4 if you are even thinking of the MPG? Just enjoy it! Never check mine, just fill her up once a week on Tesco Momentum.

I bought an S4, and I thought about the MPG. It doesnt do any harm to look at / know the running costs of a car that you own.

Note at no point does the OP say that MPG is an issue, just wants to know what the average is.

Everyone has a threshold, suspect you'd think about it if it only did 1 mpg.

I thought about it when I bought mine, and the S4 had much cheaper running costs than a B7 RS4 or C63 AMG.

Like the others I don't worry about the mpg but I do like to know what it is so I can plan a longer journey.

2009 stronic S4

Steady 20mpg on school runs and my short 5 mile drive to work

At best seen 26 on motorway journeys but must say I'm no Sunday driver

As for mpg it's money well spent

Have to say best motor iv owned cars a beast when u want it to be and a school run limo when it's needed, remap is deff on the cards !

If your just going to leave a smart **** comment to someone's genuine question then why even bother ?

Did you even ready the question ?

Sorry this sort of thing does my head in are we not all here to help

If the spirit of Chop's comment above, I've just got 32.4MPG on a 15 mile run to work at 06:30 this morning with ambient temperature +2C - journey made up of 5 miles country roads + 5 miles bypass + 5 miles suburbs! Sorry!! This tends to be my normal MPG travelling to work, going home will only be 28MPG max though!

Yes, to answer the question my long term average over 4k miles is 27mpg, over 30 is easy if no town traffic and you aren't caning it. I saw 35 once but that was quite exceptional.
