S3 or Golf R or even an S1?

I've just been playing with the Golf R configurator and I found an option that I've missed since my girlfriends ford Ka that I can't believe I couldn't spec with the S3 (or I may have missed it).

Climate windscreen

Wireless electrically conductive layer in glass laminate. In Winter, accelerates defrosting and prevents fogging. In Summer, reflects solar radiation to reduce interior temperature. (Only in conjunction with advanced telephone connection).

I love Ford's heated windscreens, we had one on the Fiesta and I retrofitted one to the Cougar. It's something I really miss on the Audi.

I massively miss the heated windscreen from my Fiesta as well, I know the A3 has heated washer jets but they are a bit cack

The Golf R has that option, one I was trying to find on the S3.

Noticeable difference after about 1200 miles or just the engine feeling a bit looser?

Would say the engine feels more acquainted now.

I will tell you why. It's because a large number if golf r cars are leased. I posted an amazing deal several months ago on hotukdeals for a golf r on a two year lease at 180 plus vat for 10k miles, approx 1200 deposit. So over 2 years it cost less than 7k. Lots of idiots got them it seems. Great cars, wife may get one as the r like the s3 is understated. Still reckon vag have made a big mistake. Why make such similar cars

Good luck if you can still find such a deal for your wife. Those deals several months ago were business only. Much later a new campaign was run where private individuals were able to apply as well.

I do think it is rather funny to suggest that people who took up a fantastic deal are idiots. I can't see the correlation.

Me neither

That's Audi drivers for you, they paint such generalisations :p
Very much sounds a s tho' your trolling to me, again V8

Definition of a troll from Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)
a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people,[1] by posting inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4]

You do so much good on ASN V8 but then spoil it all by constantly berating not only the Audi brand and their drivers, but also the S3 models. This is an Audi forum if you haven't forgot

No car is without flaws mate, S3, Golf R, Cayman, Veyron the list goes on

We all get your point, you think the S3 is *****. Any chance to say so in any thread, there you are berating it AGAIN. We know your opinions on Audi's and S3's V8 *** give it a rest, please

But what really surprises me is that you've spent your hard earned and bought a S3. I said it another thread and I'll say it again. If they're so bad why haven't you sold yours & bought something you consider 'better'

I along with a lot of other new & not so new ASN members are really excited about our current S3 and anticipated S3's, but to be constantly reminded at every turn how bad/***** our purchase is/was is a bit galling TBH

I am a member of a Golf R forum (not on there as much for obvious reasons) and I can't remember anyone being so anti S3 on there as you and you own a S3!

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but really V8 ....

Can't say I disagree with any of that. V8 does make some helpful contributions to the forum sometimes though (eg. FAQ/Search Police)

The FAQ post's V8 has done are top notch!

& some of the more in depth replies he has given to in thread questions are very informed :thumbs up:

Errrrmmm.............

Sorry if it was a little too subtle for you...... but......

That was meant to be an ironic statement, as opposed to a trolling statement !!!! :uhm:
(Me, Audi Driver, making a vast generalisation..... !! )

(I think you were a little too hasty there and jumped down my throat a bit quick!)

:lmfao:

No car is perfect, neither is the S3, it has many plus points, and some negative points!

But, as pointed out by a few on here, some S3 owners are pre-disposed to blindly believing that it's the best thing since sliced bread. Yes I have spent my ££ on it, but really is no reason to fool myself by blindly saying it's perfect, it's far from it!

Most of what I post is pretty factual, so what if the occasional view that I have is negative? There are plenty of forum members who love their S3's and this balances out the information here on this forum.

This is my 3rd Audi, I don't think anyone can accuse me of not liking the brand and being slightly loyal, but honest at the same time! Why haven't I sold my S3 and gone for something better? Well, maybe the R400 may tempt me, but for the time being, I'm not prepared to lose out in depreciation! have to say though, love the growls from the AMGs.

The last thing we want on this forum is for it to go all Apple-like with devoted followers, and sycophantic. Ugh. Just ugh.

I will admit, sometimes the temptation is too great, and I have to interrject with a "wtf" - eg: in the mono.pur thread ! I mean, seriously !

May I suggest that maybe you and some others are overly sensitive to any swipes against S3's, either by myself or others? I don't think you'll find me starting any threads slating S3's ?

Nor will you find unsolicited comments from me about S3's or Golf R's or AMG's, that someone already hasn't posted a barbed comment about, at me. I'm just responding to the hate out there ;)

That's fair enough, but please remember it's not just your forum to shape or moderate. I sometimes think you're trying too hard to balance the 'fanboys' posts. There will be discussions that you can't bear or have heard a million times, feel free to skip them

My 2 cents.

Similarly, there will be posts from those that find the S3 disappointing, one could also skip them, and just hear what you want to ! ;)

I do think that in a thread titled "S3 vs Golf R", it's fair game! :p

Just to reinforce veeeights comments - I do feel the forum benefits from a bit of balance. I love my S3 - at the price point it sits at (and for what I can afford) I believe there are few better cars considering what you get. However, it does have its flaws and myself (amongst others) have tried to give a balanced view of these flaws and what that means when driving it / living with it.

Remember - many people use this forum as a place to weigh up a (usually) emotional purchase, hence why I like there to be some rough with the smooth. We have all been in that boat before placing an order I'm sure and are glad to know all about a car (good and bad) before we do it.

Bristle, I don't wish to fall out either.

I'm not sure why you're choosing to make it about me, one lone voice in a forum full of opinions and views.

But I can't help but think that you have a slightly skewed view at the moment?

Maybe of me, or Internet foruns in general.

I've been part of the 8P forum, and lately the 8V forum.

The 8V forum does seem to be a little precious at times, compared with the 8P forum. And Pistonheads is a different league altogether. As is TTOC.

Only this week, an 8P ASN poster was complaining (in the 8P forum) that he/she was flamed in the 8V forum for mooting a different view of the 8V S3/RS3.

Not exactlt a great commendation !

Personal view is that you're all entitled to think WTF you like about any car, Audi or otherwise. Where I (and I'm sure others take issue) is where it gets personal. Don't knock each other for your respective views, respect each others opinions, and whether you like them or not; accommodate them.

I think there is a real risk in these 'modern' times that people feel the need to become hyper-offended if people hold an opposing viewpoint. People should learn to be comfortable with diversity. If we get to a point where people are enforced to conform to similar views we don't have to look back too far in history to see what kind of collectives that can spawn. Debate openly, even furiously(!), but keep it objective as healthy debate helps open everyones eyes.

Anyway, time to add my two penneth. I went out to buy an S3 8V last December and came home with an S5 as I personally didn't feel the evolution of the MQB platform delivered the benefits over the 8P I'd expected. I'd had 2 8P's, both modified because they had some pretty unpleasant handling shortcomings, but with a bit of effort and cash you could work around these issues to deliver a fun(ish) car. Steering was always the biggest achilles heel, and I never managed to get the car set up to give me real confidence as to where the transition was between grip and no grip. I therefore fancied a change so went with the S5, and despite it being a near 7 year old platform, with the sports diff, adaptive dampers and dynamic steering it's just about passable and doesn't suffer the same level of understeer I got with the S3. It's no drivers car from factory granted, much more GT tourer, but then not many Audi's are in my opinion. As a brand they're one of the safest ways to make cross country progress safely with a good turn of pace, but if you want outright fun go somewhere else. I'd have a Cayman if I didn't need space and rear seats, but unfortunately I do. The S5 offered a lot of tuning potential (+100bhp for £2k) and a bucket load of convenience for reasonable money, and provided change after a run of 8 hot hatches.

If I had to buy an S3 I'd go for the saloon. I used to have a Mk2 Jetta in the 90s and it's handling was so much more neutral and manageable than the hatch shaped Golf's. I wonder if the S3 saloon may also have this better balance with more overhang over the rear axle. Haven't driven one yet (only driven SB S3's), but I still think the S3 is a very nice car, just not hugely entertaining.

If I can appeal to your EI, be pleasant to each other, it costs nothing. Objective discussion is what makes a forum a quality environment, otherwise we just ruin it for ourselves and everyone else. Thank you. As you were!

They are both super rapid the R & S3 but I have been smoked a few times. Has to be expected.

That R forum does have some massive fan boys - I think a number of good to excellent car mag reviews have bolstered its mythical reputational of greatness.

Yes, if you're not in the right gear at the right time in the S3 or R, you'll get smoked ;)

And especially, don't take on a BMW 335D. ;)

Or fat men in stg1+ S5's! Actually if S3 had remap it would be very close, but obviously we'd be glacial against a stock Golf R ;-)
