Think I was wrong earlier, price is low because of over production. Around 25% cheaper per barrel, due to FX rates, tax and duty we only get around a 6% saving at the pumps
Just had a quick look on line, When I was 19 it was £1.76 a gallon so 39p a litre
on the plus side fortunately my 300 odd bhp 3.0 TDI A4 estate does more MPG than my 40 odd bhp 1159cc Viva
It was about 32p a gallon when I started running about on an RD250 in the good old days....!
The biggest shock for me was changing from a TDI 140 to a 3.2. Pointless even thinking about it.
Much more fun though...
when i passed my test it was 42p a lt (although for 8 months Trago and esso had a price war and it was 27p a lt for ages (around £12 to fill my old mk2 astra lol)
Tesco down here is £1.15 for diesel normal stations are £1.16.9 a lt
Essentially this is a price war (just like the supermarkets but on a continental scale). US shale oil vs Middle East oil. Competition is good up to a point - we get cheaper petrol and can blast around in our little motors for a while with big grins on our faces but if the price of oil remains too low then shale oil production becomes uneconomic and we are back to the whims of the cartel again ... so this is a global game of 'chicken'.
Not good for us...
This kind of news puts lots of projects on hold, some of the smaller sub-sea projects on hold and maybe cancelled.
For now, I'm happy to enjoy the lower prices but, longer term, there will be pain.
