GOT RIPPED by the mechanic !!!!!!!! Please Help !!!! please Help me !!!!

Chris i hope you dont mind, but after talking to you on the phone i asked the garage for there side of the story ( i have nothing better to do today, and was ready to offer them help to marry the ecu/clocks/keys up and possibly help with any translation issues!)

Ok, so chris was quoted £450 for a straight engine swap as his car broke a timing belt.

chris supplied engine and box complete from a cupra 1.8 turbo

So now on top of this, as it wasnt a straight engine swap, he is being charged for supplying and fitting correct driveshafts which were sourced at a breaker, fitting a different downpipe (no big deal), and the garage is having to delete the ecu immobiliser via a specialist.
Engine has also been fitted with new timing belt kit, but worryingly not a clutch.

I understand the garage took a chance on an unknown mechanic marrying the ecu/clocks and it failed. The ecu was never fried.

Chris has made me aware that he has the ECU and cluster from the cupra doner! This means the ecu matching to the cars exsisting clocks could have been very straight forward, reading the pins from both clusters, and then matching the turbo ecu to the car.

As the garage are not specialist, you would expect them to need to do a little research, and spend a bit of time on issues arising. I dont think the £800 they are asking is over priced, but they probably could have been clearer at the start. I would have expected a new clutch to be fitted though.

The garage says itll be running tomorrow when the immobiliser is deleted, lets hope you get to enjoy it!

Dont forget to upgrade the breaks though!

Thank you for the help guys that's why I registered here to get help sometime @udi a3 thanks for advice !!!
U guys are awesome

no ,the point is the car does not start and I need to pay for Ecu remapping ??? They did nothing I will pay for genuine stuff
and suddenly there are extra charges like storage and pushing in and out I think that's madness

i think its madness you believe this work could be carried out for so little money

learning curve for you it seems, not Ripped off by mechanic like you posted this off as

good luck trying to get it sorted

Hi, I'm guessing your polish???? Due to your English ...........

I think mate the lesson here is HOMEWORK...... Do as much research and homework as you can before delving into a "project".

There is no way on earth converting a 1.8 N.A to a 1.8 T is financially viable. Irish guy on here last week bought a decent 1.8t for £250 iirc and I bet you paid about that or more for your a3.

I hope you get it sorted, and I don't like to hear of people being ripped off or charged for work not done .

Sean

I don't want to be that guy but i mean £200 for an engine swap? What did you thinking you were getting!

It seems that the garage have done a decent job and are charging a more than fair price!

I think the £200 he paid upfront so far was to cover some of the costs of the extra parts sourced for the converison, im pretty sure chris understands the actual quote of £450 and then the revised amount of £800 and isnt suggesting the job should be completed for £200 !

As mentioned earlier, if it doesn't run asap, pay up maybe 400-£500 which seems reasonable for the work done. Break it and buy a turbo car as intended by vag. :D

With respect £800 for the work advised about is cheap tbh, I'm with Badger all day long, just remember they probably haven't even charged for allot of time for things outside of the box to try & resolve any unforeseen issues etc not there responsibility, time is money simple & £800 in this business doesn't buy vasts amounts of time with the investment in buildings, training, electricity, tools, equipment, IT investment etc, but I bet they spent a fair bit of time on it, once cars running at the garage & you're happy, then just pay the bill.

I saw a cat d s3 on a v plate 129k fully repaired for sale in Mansfield Nottingham for £1299 on gumtree few weeks ago !

Could of had an s3 for money it going to cost .......
