5W40 is a grade and carries no information as to it's performance , now almost everything is a manufacturer spec wether approved or not will reveal it's oil performance areas .

I run Fuchs Titan Race Pro S 5W-40. I went for 5w40 as it came recommended for the motor and my engine is noisy as **** when warm with 5w30. Some use it because it reduces oil consumption but mine never used a drop.
I'll always use a decent brand, and appreciate the differences between good and average oils despite the same viscosity, but I don't think it'll make a huge difference to Joe Bloggs who runs a 15 year old Audi, servicing it regularly, for the few years he'll likely keep it.

Now that's a top answer , a 5W40 Ester Racing marketed oil that differs greatly and doesn't carry a manufacturer spec because it's beyond a manufacturer spec .
Mine is a 06 plate and it’s had a new bottom end due to a cracked oil pump don’t know how that happened was gutted with a two grand bill and only had the car seven months I’m thinking of using the 5w 40 Fuchs oil as recommended by yourself and just rob

All down to you really chap, advise is given on a personal experience basis really .
I 've been using it without issue for a few years and i find it has been a very wise move, but all down to you really as personal recommendations are just that.
If you are unsure or uneasy with changing from the OE 5w-30 to something else then maybe best stay with the OE oil .

The oil Rob and I use is overkill, IMO. I use it because I don't notice another tenner or so when doing an oil change, but some might. (Edit: That's not a boast, I'm skint, it's just that an oil change seems to cost so much these days that 10-20 isn't a big issue. I remember getting premium oil and filter for sub £20 not all that long ago!)
IMO, the most important things are:
- Ensure the oil meets the standards printed in your owners manual
- Buy a decent brand
- Change your oil more regularly than the book says
- DO NOT follow the long life intervals
Honestly chap, forget the longlife part of the equation.
If you feel you wish to use the OE spec oil , that's fine but ensure you change the oil on a much shorter basis than the audi shedule, the longlife shedule kills these engine, just use decent quality oil of a suitable spec and do regular oil services and that will be fine.
I was looking at Castrol but rob said it’s personal peference and he wasn’t impressed by it when he had used it and good comments and advice go a long way to be honest

Really? Genuine question. I know you get some well spec'd cheaper oils, but as a rule of thumb, the big names seem to be there or there-abouts in the internet tests I've seen (as much weight as those hold...).
I agree Gaz on the shedule but is any oil really long life though, if one changes the engine oil every 6k ish miles when used in an engine that is not used much does longlife really make any difference.
The oil industry is tightly regulated so standards are high , remember the supermarket own brands regarding food...
Yes because it's oil basestocks and additive package were superior from the start to perform and last for so long .
I think this maybe confusing Feza a tad now chaps, putting aside our personal preferences on oil etc and the wealth of technical knowledge Gaz has on the subject, maybe we can agree on a middle of the road choice for Feza to go with rather than bombard him with more choices and info than he really needs.

Never used it but on paper that is one complete oil from protection to fuel economy etc as 504.00 507.00 and MB 229.52 .
What’s with all the numbers lol what brand is that to put it in English lol times have changed from when I was a mechanic 30 yrs ago and technology has changed so much it’s mind boggling I was thinking of putting a thicker oil in it as the car has 108 k on the clock and like rob said stay away from long life oil as if I have to change it every 20 k miles I would be doing it every three to four years

Have a look , forget about what we have recommeded brand wise etc as we have our own reasons for choosing the oils we use which may not be the same as your reasons.
They are all good products so you wont be getting some 2nd grade stuff .

But what is 2nd grade ?
There isn't really as the oil industry is tightly regulated so brand is not vital , very much the same marketing of own brand supermarket goods Vs branded .

Not as such, but there are just too many choices.
It's like your local sweet shop , so many sweets to choose from and when you do choose one do you want it in lemon or strawberry, with nuts or raisens..lol
