Hi all,

Right... Last week I was giving the s3 an... Enthusiastic drive round truxton race circuit! At about 15:30 enging managmeman light comes on, that's the end of that... Read the codes it saying MAF. luckily I had a spare at home so I put this in and the lights go and car feels ok. On the way home from work the next day epc light comes back car judders and idles at 1200rpm rough.. eventualy cutting out and not starting. Read the codes, said P0011 camshaft position sensor and also the crankshaft position sensor. I read that these can be something to do with timing. At a quick inspection of the cams does this look right? There are also chain marks on the inside of the rocker cover! Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks

Those marks are only part of the whole picture...

Any chance you can scan with VCDS in case there are some VAG specific variations of the codes in there?

I would suggest making sure cyl 1 is at physical TDC then check the exhaust cam mark... if out then it suggests the belt is at least a tooth out although I'd expect an incorrect correlation fault code... although as you have not posted the other code you may well have (information is king when attempting to diagnose)

If the exhaust mark aligns when at physical TDC then you can check cam to cam at that point... inlet cam should align when exhaust mark is aligned and top tensioner pad is fully extended up wards...

To be honest if it wasn't 'out' before then cam to cam is unlikely to be out now... its not something that 'jumps'... other things that can happen is the tensioner pads can break up but you would hear that...

Based on what you have said it almost sounds like the belt has slipped... I would also check the crank pulley bolt and pulley alignment... have seen this come loose before and the pulley be loose enough to prevent starting/running...

Post all the codes though...

Hi tuffty

Thanks for your reply, the other foods were P0322 , P0321 and also 01314, the 01314 code was coming up before the others did this no longer comes up after putting in an old MAF. I will have to check the timing on the crank etc, nothing feels loose, it's almost like the stress and heat has fried some sensors.... I don't have access to vcds unfortunately. Do you think it could just be a fault engine speed sensor for instance? I don't really want to get replacing them without knowing as they are £100+ each from tps.

Thanks, I guess it's a good place to start to see if this sorts my issue will keep updated would this sensor being bad cause the camshaft message?

Don't recall seeing this come up in conjunction with a faulty crank sensor but... if the ECU can't see a plausible crank signal then it has no easy way to correlate that to cam position I guess....

Fix the known issue first, clear codes and see what comes back...

I would also be tempted to verify the overall timing position too as I mentioned in my previous post... TDC cyl 1 and check all the timing marks align properly to eliminate that as a cause

I got that error when I fitted my belt was a tooth out.

when was the cam belt last changed? someone on the TT forum had some errors took the car back to the garage and they said the belt was loose (personally I reckon they forgot to pull the grenade pin)

Cheers guys, I will get on checking the timing.
I actually have a vcds cable at home.i bought ages ago from wish I will see if it works.

Stuart, the belt was done 4 and a half years ago last time so it's due very soon. I've had 0 issues until now? Cheers

Update*

Checked timing everything is spot on, got a new genuine crankshaft sensor(engine speed sensor) from TPS and it seems to have cured the problem nothing has come back and car is running great! Thanks for the help.

As i was reading through this is was thinking crank sensor…

When my Cps failing i got random cam sensor codes, sometimes with a crank sensor one aswell but not all the time, when i changed the sensor it had been replaced before with a non genuine one…

Glad you are sorted
