Jeff's S4

Jeff’s S4 – Five weeks and 1,000 miles in:

Things I love:

The powertrain – coming back to petrol (even from an engine as nice as Audi’s 3.0TDi V6) is just soooooo welcome. The growl on start-up is something I never tire of hearing, and the power delivery is exquisitely relentless. I’ve still not yet given it the full beans, and I’m still getting used to the ratios and differing shift patterns of the S-Tronic. But I still know enough about it to understand that this is a seriously quick but stealthy* performer. I’ve not yet slung it down a deserted twisty road in anger; maybe in the Autumn when we go to Northumberland. Until then, I can’t offer a proper opinion on the handling.

..and these are your feelings on a standard un-mapped s4 :)

Just wait until you start tinkering and that 15 plate ASton Martin Vantage driver gets p*ssed off that an everyday saloon car just whipped his ***!

Thanks for sharing Jeff. I can't think of a car that ticks as many boxes as this and am very pleased I have one.

Interesting read Jeff. I certainly agree with you that I don't think that the B8.5 or the B8 is going to look as outdated as we might have expected with the B9 coming.

If you haven't played with your settings I'd advise that you put the automatic headlights to early intervention. It may make it so sensitive as to occasionally dip when it doesn't need to, but I find that on the other settings it is too slow to dip and I got plenty of 'flashes' from oncoming drivers.

First thing I did on day one. :)

Nice write up Jeff. I agree with the key gripe thing - I've got used to it now but I always thought it was an odd place to have it, it also means I can't cope with a key ring attached to the key as its hanging and 'jingling' around there almost in the centre of the dash!!

...and I said it at the start, your alloys go great with Tornado ;)

I haven't put my key in that slot yet. Maybe I'll do it one day just for the sake of it!

Look what I now have. :)

Wonder if it's a B8/B8.5 thing.

I don't get oil temp but lap timer works.
I just get radio station above lap timer

Hi, @Bristle Hound, welcome back, hope you had a good break.

It seems that since the last time I'd used Carista Pro, they'd updated it to include enable lap timer and oil temp. I suspect yours will be the sane, so fire it up and check it out. I forget which menu it's in, but once you find it, it's just a case of touching the enable button.

So now the car is, today, exactly one month short of a year old, and is coming up for 8,000 miles. I always avoided Audi Variable Servicing and kept my cars on fixed annual services. Initially, I intended doing the same with the S4, but one of our number (I think it might have been @desertstorm) suggested leaving it on variable servicing but swap the oil in between times. That seemed a pretty sensible idea so tomorrow morning, it's going into my local trusted indie, Sanspeed of Bexleyheath, for an oil and filter change.

Well that's done and the car's back on the drive by 11am.

Cost me £121; not bad for a first year's servicing cost.

I really wish I'd done this, so much cheaper. Mind you mine's in on Monday and if they set it to Variable (again) I'll just leave it and do this.

You guys seem to be confident about "set to variable or fixed" but I'm not. The people at the dealer couldn't explain it either. I can't remember the exact figures buy my MMI/DIS was telling me that the oil should be changed in 5000miles/30 days about 1 month from its anniversary. Then theses numbers changed, mostly down but sometimes up over the days before I got the oil changed. Now that fact that it was not a clear day-by-day countdown tells me that it is not fixed. But if it is variable then why the two numbers, mileage and time, which don't agree. Am I being unreasonable in expecting a fixed service indicator to be simply a countdown of how many days until exactly 12 months since the SRI was reset, which reduced by 1 each day. Or a variable service indicator to be a countdown of how many miles before service is needed, and this can reduce at rate which does not necessarily match actual mileage as the name suggests.

Is the Audi implementation a misguided attempt to display both variable and fixed indication at the same time so that I can choose which to do?

Anyway, I agree with Jeff's idea and had considered it myself.

Some pics taken today, exploring my new camera, my first D-SLR. It was a good winter day to be cleaning the car; lots of bright sunshine, and a sharp breeze to dry it out. Plus, of course, opportunities for contrasting shadow and shininess. :)

@scotty76, this one was taken after I'd topped up the coolant with G13 supplied free of charge by Bexley Audi a few months ago.

@jdp1962 - S4 looking fab Jeff :thumbs up:

Just come off the phone to Elite Direct in Rainham. After 14,000 miles, the hated Contis will be history in a couple of hours time. Instead, the S4 will be on Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2s. Getting a Hunter 4-wheel alignment done at the same time, just for good measure.

Was out in the country lanes in Kent yesterday, and the tramlining was really quite unpleasant.

Service time, same as @scotty76 and @Bristle Hound.

I called in at Bexley Audi this afternoon, asked for a quote for an inspection service and pollen filter change. They quoted £418 and £55 respectively, making £473 all in. Then went to Sanspeed, my local indie that's been taking case of my Audis for fifteen years. They quoted £257 for the same work. I emailed the pdf to Bexley Audi who confirmed they'll match that provided Sanspeed add the words "using all genuine Audi parts".

I'll get Sanspeed to do that tomorrow, and then book the car into Bexley Audi for the end of the month. Once the service is done, I'll then book it into Sanspeed for a brake fluid change (£50) and air-con service (£40), and get them to fit my billet transmission mount, which will have arrived from China by then.

Sanspeed are also pricing up an S-Tronic oil change (there may not be any saving there if they're forced to order the fluid in a huge minimum quantity). It's way early for a S-Tronic oil change but it doesn't do any harm to be extra cautious, especially if Sanspeed also some up with a nice cheeky little Stage 1 remap for it.

Watch this space on those last two bits:)

I paid £318 for oil/inspect/pollen/brake service at my trusted indie so that's very close to yours.

Why the air-con service? Does it need one?

I believe it is actually on the schedule for year 2. I didn't bother. I'm going to do it in year 4. :)
