You've had both the mk7 and new A3 SB?
Clearly he meant the previous iterations of the cars; are you deliberatly obtuse or just dense Bob?
You've had both the mk7 and new A3 SB?
But your not comparing the new Golf VII with the A3. The new Golf is so much better than previous Golf models that is basically comes down to whether you prefer the Golf's touch screen setup or the Audi MMI/popup screen.
Gotta say it came down to a lot more for me, and I had the new 1 series in the mix as well. Not trying to be argumentative , but I wouldn't pick a car on whether I preferred pop up to touch screen, if the overall drive of the car ,exterior looks, comfort in the cabin etc; outshone all others, and it had a screen or dash I didn't like, to be honest I'd learn to like it !
Mark.
Exactly.
It's a fairly minor thing and to be fair, most people could live with either system and adjust quite well. However, as h5djr has said previously, the A3 doesn't provide enough boot space for his needs which I would consider a major deal breaker. Everyone 'weights' different factors in their car purchase.... I can't think of many that would heavily 'weight' a media interface.
To me a touch screen setup is ideal - you just touch the thing you want to activate, just like on a tablet, smartphone or kindle. If the A3 had been designed to have had a similar touch screen setup to the Golf I would even consider another A3 with possibly part of the rear seat folded down to accommodate my mobility scooter because I like Audi in general and the A3 in particular, but I don't see any point in spending £12-13k on something I just don't like.
There's the problem for me. Phones and cars aren't comparable. Touch screen is great on a phone, but in a car where I want to do stuff while keeping my eyes on the road, touchscreen makes no sense to me. There's no tactile feedback and therefore I have to take my eyes off the road. As has been said before (by me and others), I can use the A3 MMI perfectly without having to look at the buttons. Its intuitive and tactile.
Touchscreen means similar probs with smartphones of course. You have to look at the screen to text or complete virtually any task. I could text blind with my old nokias ten years ago. The thing is though, smartphones bring so much more to the table that this becomes a minor or basically non-issue.
Unlike smartphones, there's no upside with the VW system that I can see that makes the tradeoff worth it. It doesn't bring any extra functionality over the A3s MMI system.
is there really more boot space in the golf? thought they were almost identical
The front to back at cill level on the Golf is 760mm whereas on the 3-door A3 it's 770 and on the Sportback 778mm, so the A3 is 10/18mm bigger than the Golf. This is the measurement that is important for me to get my mobility scooter into the luggage area. On my existing Sportback the same measurement is 810mm so 32mm smaller. This one of the main rearsons I think I will be looking for an Estate next time. The A4 would be no good because, apart from being a lot more expensive, only the quattro models have the s-tronic, the rest having the multi-tronic which is no where near as nice to drive.
Would you but an Octavia estate H5djr?
I did consider at one stage buying an Octavia as VRS estate looked smart but preferred A3 SB dimensions and styling.
Certainly lots of luggage space with an Octavia but no idea of s-tronic options.
Curious if you would be tempted away from Audi and VW badge?
