Hi chaps,

Im thinking about getting my windscreen tinted and been getting some mixed information online about it
Have any of you got yours done(if possible can you share details of where you got it done) and have you had any issues with the police or passing MOT?

thanks

First of all, don't

Secondly, if you do go for it, tinting the front is illegal
Thirdly, if you go for that whanky chameleon tint (legal), don't

Sorry in advance

Yeah nah those chameleon ones look like **** so I was going to get just a basic black one

and I though you could tint the front as long as it lets through over 75-80% light?

I think the rules are it has to let 75% light through. This doesn’t mean you can slap 25% tint on. The glass isn’t perfectly clear. You will probably find that it’s probably not far off that 75-80% from factory.
general rule is don’t touch front windows unless it’s the clear protective films. You don’t want to attract attention to yourself and get stopped all the time anyway.

Tinting front windows is the same fine as speeding? Damn
that’s was just a a guess. Years ago I remember being in my mates car and his front side windows was tinted and the police escorted him home with windows open in the middle of winter then gave him 7 days notice to get it off and stamped at mot station and bring it back to police station.
It could be worse. If you cause an accident it could mean jail time.

Suppose I’ll stay away and will have to invest in prescription sun glasses
The front windscreen can be 70% and front Doors 75%, but they are usually this from the factory.
The best thing with prescription sunglasses is you can take them off at night and see where you’re going.

Maybe a tinted shade band at the top of the windscreen would work? Not sure on the legality of them but I remember my dads old Cavalier having one from factory. I guess it depends how far down you go with it.

Prescription sunglasses will probably be best and you can use them when you're out and about

Some 8V's actually have a tint band from the factory believe it or not

When ordering a new screen from Autoglass after a chip, the VIN number showed it was 'acoustic glass / smoke tint sun band' or something along those lines. It was a genuine Audi Pilkington glass screen that arrived and was identical to the one being removed with the tinted sunband.

Yep. Windscreens now have a graduated tint sun band for about the top couple of inches combined with the tapered black dots to obscure the optical aberrations in the areas of the window with the greatest curvature or close to the frame.

I have a band of the dark tint (same as on rear windows) across the top of the windscreen. It's about 6 inches deep. Looks good on black car and is great with low winter sun.

It's called a top-tint, been about for ages. Escort's and Sierra's had them back in the 80's. Personally I prefer non top-tint, as I'm quite tall and you can end up with the transition between the tint and the non-tinted part of the glass right in your eye line. Which is very annoying when you're bouncing around inside it and the colour of your view keeps changing!

Come on chaps confession time, who stuck a top tint on their cars when they where young and skint? I think you have to be above the age of maybe 38 to be in this clique though but happy to be proved wrong!

I certainly bought a black one from Halfords, and stuck it to my first MK2 Golf when I was 19...ah the early 00's..I even had under car neons at one point

I miss the days when you didnt have to go and 'hire' an expensive specced up S3 on PCP (a car that you never actually own) to get thumbs up from people on a forum, you literally spent hours grovelling in the rain and the snow without the help of Youtube figuring out how to do stuff :) A Haynes manual, your old man and an impermeable ability to manage grazed knuckles, cold and breaking stuff.

Haha - Fair play Dubjam

Age bracket: yes
A somewhat grubby and dog eared Haynes Manual: yes

Digging into an engine & electrics to fix stuff before computers or plastic covers, and when cars came with a stereo less effective than a £20 boom box.

I think my saddest mod was installing an automatically extending & retracting telescopic aerial, or believing the Slick50 hype when my valve stems started leaking……

…..and yet, no tints.

Neons rule :) but I'm over 40 now so I'd look as bad as a balding 70 year old in a red MX5, however Id be more than happy if my nephew wanted to put a set on his motor when he comes of age

Was booked in for front window tints today but cancelled after reading 2 things , one if I’m in a accident my fault or not I’d still be held accountable in some way as I would have an illegal mod restricting my view , 2 my insurance is invalidate so I could ended losing my car and paying for another car’s repairs
