    Morning

My cars in today for a cambelt and water pump change.

Just had Audi on the phone saying it’s good news and my car has a electronic conventual water pump and it doesn’t won’t need changing and instead of 495 it’ll be 350.

Should I take there word for it and let them just change the timing belt and leave the water pump

    Anyone know the difference?

Which A3 have you got ?
I spoke to Audi recently, and they said that my TDi 150 needs the electronic water pump changing with the cambelt. £800 they quoted for the work.

I thought it was only the ea888 gen 3 that had the electric water pump instead of the normal cam belt driven ones.

Didn't know anything about electronic water pumps until Audi told me, so I checked with my trusted independent mechanic (who will be doing the job for me). He confirmed what Audi said.

The thing for me is there’s been a lot of historic issue with vag water pumps before like plastic impeller breaking , bearing Etc. These were all cam belt driven.
Is the new electric pump better and more reliable? Would you not change it as a precaution like you would with a cam belt driven one?
This is not an opinion but a genuine question to put out to you guys. I’ve never had to do one or know anyone with an electric water pump.

I just got my wife's car (Golf mk7 2.0 tdi) cambelt changed this week and it was booked in for the water pump to be changed as well but they only changed the cambelt, service guy said it might be in a different location but might be the same reason - saved me £55

That's really interesting. Thanks for letting me know.
I'm going to ring around a few different dealers now and see what information they give regarding the water pump.

I’ll give parts request a shout on here too and get him to confirm.

Can only be a good thing if it’s eletronic. As if it goes surely it won’t take the timing out with it like belt driven ones do

Have spoken to 5 different places now - main dealers, independents and parts suppliers - and have had different info from all of them.
Can belt definitely getting done soon, but still can't decide on the water pump.

If it’s eletronic it shouldn’t need to come off right ?? As it won’t be driven from any belt ? I’ve been wrong before though

Intersting, mines getting done in next few weeks, 2013 2.0TDI 150bhp no mention of any of this. Cambelt and Water pump each quote. £600-£750 from audi in north east depending on offers.

Prestige german motors in south shields quote £460 cambelt & water pump.

Swift engineering in newcastle was £469 if i remember right but a bit out the way for me.

Latest thing I've been told is that the water pump has a solenoid for electrical operation from startup, then it changes to belt driven once the engine is warm.

Swift is where I got my mot from in jan. can highly recommend them. Only went to Audi as I needed a car

Aud didn’t mention it untill they started the job they then rang me and told me the good news

Prestige German cars seem alright I was in there on Friday having a look at the cars they have for something to do

Forgot to mention I did speak to Audi uk who then spoke to there tech team apparently, and he did say it isn’t driven off the cambelt as I questioned it as I’ve grown up being told change both
