hi I’m new to the forum,

my turbo blew on the way home and sucked oil through the exhaust, I was told when I bought it 3 years ago that it had an upgraded Garret turbo.. I was wondering if anyone knew what turbo and manifold I could get that will bolt straight on without issues?

I’m going to New York in 4 weeks so I haven’t got a lot of cash but I need it fixed for work, I’ve Been struggling to find one that will bolt straight on.. can anyone help?

    Many thanks

    Matt

Probably not if you don’t know what turbo it is we won’t ? Is it standard exhaust manifold?
What bhp is the car ?

I’m using another car at the moment I just didn’t want to have to leave my car at the garage for a few days or weeks just wondered if there was a cheaper option

As far as I’m aware it’s a standard manifold, it’s 130bhp but has got an eco remapwhovj brings it up to I think 145bhp I’ve tried getting the turbo number

If its a PD130 thats mapped to 145bhp then I doubt its anything special turbo wise... most PD130's map up to that or better on the std turbo I believe

I'd just get a replacement PD130 turbo tbh...

Have a chat with these guys if you are still stuck... they know their dervs..

PD turbos were Garrett’s, PD130 was GT17 IIRC. PD130 would normally map to around 160-170. PD130 turbo is GT1749 I think. However a PD115 or non PD 110 engine can map to 145 bhp. What plate is the car?

If its a PD110 with a PD130 turbo I hope they changed the injectors :/

Lol you would hope so. ”Upgraded Garrett turbo” makes me think it’s a 110 or PD 115 running a PD130 turbo. 145 bhp is pretty crappy for that even with an “eco” map. A 110 or PD115 turbo can make 145 bhp on a map. “Upgraded turbo” for a PD130 would be hybrid or PD150 and I don’t see it being either of them at 145 bhp.

Also 110 bhp arent PD they’re VE engine. Don’t believe there was ever a PD110 engine. The 1.9 tdi 90 and 110 preceded PD which came out 2000 (I had the first PD engine, PD115 in my b5 a4).

My old fabia VRS put out 182BHP on the (very optimistic) dyno after a quick remap.

It was practically throwing coal out of the exhaust pipe too.

    Good times.

It’s a 2003 5 door pd130 my mechanic managed to find one and put it all on he had it running for a couple of hours in the to try and get rid of the smoke from the oil in the exhaust but on his way to get it MOT’d it was just smoking to much to carry on so had it picked up and taken back, so looking at new exhaust or cat maybe?

Loss of power? We’re talking blue smoke then if you’re on about oil, or is it black? Is it all the time or just on acceleration?

He didn’t say anything about any loss of power he said it was fine other than the smoke from the oil so I’m guessing it’s all ok other than that,

The car check comes up as 130bhp, I bought it from someone who’s son had just started a remapping company and said he had put an eco map on it which should have taken it from 135 to 145/150 so I’m only going on his work as I have no proof of this, it’s a pretty quick car feels a lot quicker then my last car which 205bhp so unless I stick on a dyno I’ll never know what bhp it’s at

Oil smoke would be blue so I’m going to assume that’s what it is and not black smoke. Although PD’s will always puff out abit of black, excessive black smoke would point to a **** map overfuelling or boost leak etc.

So assuming it’s oil, did the smoke get worse when he started driving it or was it the same? Blue smoke points to either a turbo issue, piston rings or valve stem seals. Seeing as the turbo has just been replaced I would assume it’s turbo related. Was the turbo checked over fully before fitting? Any shaft play? Oil lines, bolts fitted correctly etc?
Has the boost pipework been checked over for oil pools? If you/mechanic has checked over all of this I would take it for a gentle drive out and see if the smoking gets less.

Where are you from? If I know/suspect a car has a remap from an unknown source/mapper I would take it to a competent and proven tuner to check it over. My old S3 had a map put on when I bought it which didn’t feel right. Turned out the map was awful and they’d just turned the boost up to stupid levels without altering fuelling. I won’t say who the dealer’s map it was but it rhymes with “VEVO”. Not saying your map is bad but I’d get it looked out for piece of mind. A lot of poor maps out there.

Yeah I see where your coming from, I’ve had it 3 years and didn’t have a problem with it until I drove home from a night shift I heard a pop on the motorway I thought maybe a pipe had popped off or something, so I pulled into a works exit then as I lifted the bonnet I saw blue smoke from the exhaust..

Called RAC and he said it was likely to be the turbo blown, my mechanic is my girlfriends dad (no labour costs ) I’m sure he would have done all the necessary checks before putting it on, usually he would have said start looking for something else if it was anything more than the turbo, he didn’t mention if there was more or less smoke I live in ashfordkent his garage is in folkestone, I start work early and finish at anytime 2pm or 6pm so I can’t always stop by his after work.

All I can assume is that there must be a shed load of oil soaked in the cat? I will definitely get the map checked out, I did have an issue when I first bought it where the turbo would just cut out completely which was around 120mph (it was a new car to me who doesn’t see what there car can do ) never thought anything of it because I’ve always driven at 75/85.

I had been toying with the idea of another map more power acceleration so this could be a good opportunity providing the smoke finally settles, I think he will put another system on it and see if it’s cleared might try and a system from work if anyone decides to write one off... in the nicest way

I will definitely ask about the smoke colour lack of power etc when I speak to him tomoz

I’d double check the boost pipes, check there isn’t an oil pool in the intercooler pipe that’s struggling to shift. If there’s nothing there, take it for a fairly long gentle drive and see if there’s any improvement. Check the oil, see if it’s using any. If it’s still smoking alot, I’d double check the oil lines, turbo shaft. You could pop the cat off and have a look, personally I’d expect oil in the exhaust to clear pretty quickly but you never know.

I was reading an article the other day about poor PCV function causes turbos to smoke as the oil return pipe is gravity fed and if too much blow-by the oil cant return to the sump and pushes through the turbo seals as still pumped into the top of the bearings

I spoke to the garage yesterday and he said I was ready to collect..

He said that he had cleaned the inside lf the exhauust he had to heat it and used water or some other liquid source and allowed to dry the power is up until I get to 80mph then it cuts outs out the turbo seems to do it when it’s warm if I stay at 70 it’s fine

I’m not sure if it’s where I’m in 6th gear at a steady 80/90mph at a certain rev for a while?

Has the smoking stopped now? What’s it like throughout the Rev range? Is the issue only speed related?

There was a bit of white smoke when I picked it up going up the motorway then it cut out.. I thought here we go again so I turned it off and on again then it was working fine, the smoking stopped completely now it happened most when I was going up a a hill around 80mph.. I really do appreciate all your advice and help

Didn’t you say you had it cutting power at 120 mph before? Personally I think you should get your map checked out by a reputable tuner to rule anything map related out. Where in the country are you?

I think your right, I’ll need to get it looked at, it was doing it at 120 only the few times I went that fast, I didn’t notice before that there was a delay in the power I know there was generally some lag but I’m noticing that at about 2700rpm I feel the turbo about to kick in the all of a sudden it just unleashed full power, I’m from ashford, Kent bud

When you say it’s cutting out do you mean the engine dies or it just feels flat but the engine is still running? Has the mechanic scanned it for any fault codes? EGR valve isn’t playing up? Has that been checked? Was the actuator checked when the new turbo was fitted?

If it was me, I’d go back to your mechanic, tell him what’s happened, see what he says. Check out the EGR valve, scan for codes, if there’s nothing mechanically wrong with it and no codes are present then I’d take it to have the map checked.

Being in Kent you’re a million miles from all the best VAG tuners lol. Off the top of my head, best VAG tuner I can think of nearby would be Alex at AKS tuning. That’s still Bedford though. Can give him a ring or drop an email. Unless anyone else can think of anyone decent around those parts?

I was hoping not to pester him with it as he said and I quote “I’ve never worked on a awkwardly frustrating pile of **** in his life” I think I caught him at a bad time though lol,

Yeah I always seem to be miles away from the best of anything , I’ll pop it on my diagnostics see if anything pops up on there it might not be the best one out there but it’s worth a shot,

I was contemplating doing an egr delete but nothing was wrong for me to continue with it plus with the new law I heard about it I thought I’d just swerve it,

I can only assume he has checked the actuator, the engine doesn’t cut out it just feels flat and lose’s speed on any type of incline, it’s frustrating because up until now I haven’t needed to spend a pennie on it passed it’s mot with advisory’s on tyres or brake pads and it economical for the miles I do every day.

Not being funny but tough for your mechanic. You paid him to do a job, you’re still having issues that could be related to that job. He should try working on an S3 then he’ll know what a pig of a car to work on is lol. It sounds like potentially a sticking EGR valve to me. Check it’s not clogged up and is actually working.

He said he’s from Ashford so it’s about 2 and half hour drive roughly. Like I said, I can’t think of a reputable VAG tuner down there off the top of my head, hence why I asked if anyone else had any suggestions.

I’ll definately check the egr valve probably this weekend I can’t seem to finish work early enough,

If I had more time then I wouldn’t need to take it to him, I’d prefer to do it all myself, it was running fine this morning didnt cut out at all, even on the way home.

I thought I’d just keep accelerating and see what speed/rpm it would cut out.. I got to 120 and thought I’d leave it at that and slowed down.

On tick over it does idle higher than 750rpm it’s closer to 1000rpm I don’t know if they’ve adjusted the throttle cable or this is part of the issue hopefully cleaning out the egr will help with theses problems.
