Facelift Standard exhaust

I have a completely standard S3 atm, the exhaust on it crackles and pops like no ones business it's great, but say if I have my car in dynamic and neutral and I rev it the exhaust sometimes crackles and sometimes doesn't. Anyone got any idea why?

Also the fact you're limited to about 4k RPM in neutral/park maybe? Not quite enough to get them out?

The cars tend to pop and crackle less once the oil temps etc are up.

I've found the pops and crackles are much more prominent after I've driven the car hard. I suspect the temperature of the exhaust is a big factor.

i get this all the time, as @allanmb just mentioned, if the exhaust gets red hot after a bit of spirited driving the pops on mine actually make me jump sometimes if I'm in sport and it drops a gear early haha funny when the missus is in the car aswel I normally get told off!

There are loads of reason why sometimes it may pop and sometimes not.

Usually it helps if the car is up to temperature, oil and coolant!

And if you have been driving hard, the exhaust temperature will get to its hottest and this is perfect for burning any partly combusted fuel!
