Recently bought a 200k Miler A4 Avant, Starting issue which I can't diagnose?

Hi Guys,

I have a 2006 2.0 TDI A4 AVANT (170BHP Model)
It has 200k on so i know i'm not expecting a perfect car



It has a very strange starting issue, more apparent when cold, it does ease when car has been ran for a while....

I have attached a video so you can see what its like.

I have changed 02 Sensor (Pre-Cat_ & All Glowplugs which hasnt really done anything positive so far...

I have not tried battery yet but has been tested and its in good working order.

the exhaust does smell really bad! but that smoke goes away after a while.

No idea, just does not smell right, really foul smell, almost like its been decatted/dpf deleted, I am unsure if this year had a DPF as the exhausts point down towards the ground.

Have you serviced it and changed your fuel filter?
Could be clogged DPF also.

I’ve got a service kit to do on it soon, I don’t think it’s dpf model, exhaust points down and no dpf light available on dash, but could be wrong!

just seems like such an odd issue

If it's a 170 BRD then you have a DPF.
I would get that fuel filter changed.
Do you know when it was last serviced then?
They could be replacement back boxes, the 2 outlets should point straight out.

Mines 170 ,has a downward pointing exhaust and a dpf .no dpf on dash but there is one that will illuminate on the DIS
Remove engine cover look to left side of engine under the egr cooler if u have one after turbo .looks like this

Yeah I’ll get it serviced as soon as I can, no history with the car unfortunately

Could explain the hard starting due to losing fuel pressure whilst stood and the smell of fuel as its leaking neat diesel into the cylinders.

I know but I’ve got no issues with driving and oil pressure, it’s just starting

You don't get pressure issues until your hex key rounds off. There is no way if knowing how much without checking it.

It must be somewhat okay if the car has done 200k maybe it got changed a while ago, of course I’ll never know, been driving it daily with no issues apart from the slow starting like in the video, just seems odd, not going to moan too much the car was less than £1000
