Just above tick over the catalytic converter resonates and rattles.
I was hoping it was just the heat shield but it is not.
When the engine is off and I tap the catalytic converter with a hammer I can hear some loose piece(es) inside it.
I assume the matrix has degraded and broken. The car has 110,000 on the clock.
Is there a cheap fix or does it need replacing?
Out of curiosity and environmental obligations will replacing it improve emissions?
Thanks.

My mistake, that is very unusual as here in Australia they don't.

You could gut the cat or replace it with a decat but the best solution would be to replace it with a new one to save you mot troubles in future

Thanks, I was hoping there'd be a "redneck" fix.
Does anyone know if by replacing it I will achieve more than solve my rattle? I.E Improved emissions?
(That would help me feel better about spending that much money to eradicate a minor rattle.)

There is a chance it's a little blocked so a new cat would allow the car to breath better. Not too sure how diesel cars affect cats so I can't really comment

Won't solve a rattle that's for sure. I don't like additives you add to fuel due to the mixed feedback and experiences
