After owning a string of Audi A4's Ive just bought a 2009 Audi A3 Sportback. Its done 60k and has the 1.8tfsi petrol engine with the 7 speed S Tronic gearbox. This is my 1st Automatic car and I think I have a issue already.

The car goes through the gears up and down perfect, but has a slight intermittent judder. Only happens as I pull away slowly and more often when Im turning. Only happens now and again though. After doing a number of searches, people are saying it could be a number of things. But I would think if it was a gearbox issue it would do this everytime?

Has anyone else has the same problem or could it be related to the steering rack, drive shafts etc, any help appreciated as im new to all of this, cheers.

Go through and check systematically

Tyres
Wheel balancing
Wheels/suspension arms for buckle
Bushes (espesh dogbone mount)
Driveshaft/CV joints

Then look at the box if all that is exhausted

Check if it needs a gearbox oil change. It may be one of those dry boxes

I think the 7 speed on this model is the dry box. Been out in the car again today, doesn't do it at first, only when the car is warmed up, and even then not every time, does it in a ta right line but more so when turning, ESP left. I've yet to check the CV boots and driveshafts, but thinking it may be the clutch starting to wear.

Can these be adjusted or reset or is it gearbox out time? :-(

Hi Barry, mines got a similar judder, learned to live with it now and hardly notice it anymore.

Mines a 6spd auto, thought it could be the map (was a bad ramap when I bought it) so I remapped it which helped a lot, then I changed throttle body - again helped a little but not much. I'm going to change my throttle pedel next as I want the silver R32 ones.
Many have said I need the change points looking at, but its only the engagement of adding throttle pressure to pedal and that's when it happens, and not when changing from gear to gear. Not when letting off the brake off and letting the car roll on its own steam in first.

Audi looked at it and wanted to change the clutch and the mech/control unit in gearbox! £3k ish ....even then they weren't sure!!

May have to take it to a specialist, don't wanna throw money at it just guessing and I'm sure Audi with all their know how will surely try pulling my pants down, made up with the car but this is putting a dark cloud over it!

I felt the same when I got mine... But love the car too!
It would be worth looking at the engine / gearbox mounts too! .... What's it like in reverse?

Seems ok upto now, thought it Clicked a bit the other day but I may have been to quick to pull away, I was thinking about them and cv boots/driveshaft and Even wishbones but only does it when warm and itermitten, puzzled. I've searched on Google and just reading loads of horror stories saying it could be loads of different things!
