Haven't read through all the responses so apologies if this has already been answered. I think as @Rob2k68 says it is for rattling purposes. I stuck a plate on with Harris Number Plate Tape on my Focus ST on top of the foam stuff and it was fine, never came un-stuck at all.
Also on my S3 the detailer cut down the foam (slightly shorter than normal plate) and I believe the remainder of it is still behind the plate (which he stuck on)
Should be fine
Tips: Clean the plate back with IPA and warm it all (foam and the tape) with a hairdryer before you stick it down
What is the bit made out of where the rear plate goes?
I want to stick mine on but it looks a bit like foam? Wondering how well it will stick to that.
