Hey everyone.

First off the car is a 2008 s3 6 speed manual Finally got round to jacking the car up and finding where the oil has been leaking from. Traced it back to this oil seal cap which can be seen from an access hatch in the passengers wheel arch. Has anyone changed this before? From the info I can find apparently there is some bearing behind it.

I don’t know if once I remove this cap all the gearbox oil is going to drain out of it. Any info would be appreciated.

part number 02M 301 211 B

Hey guys. Thought I would give this thread an updated. Managed to get this seal changed and it was a really easy job And decided to make a guide for anyone in the future. I changed my gearbox oil at the same time, dunno if I needed to but thought I would anyway.

This is the new seal I ordered it from Dingbros with the part number above. Think it was £7ish

So first off I started of by draining the gear box oil out. I removed the fill plug then the drain plug and let it drain for 10 minutes. I then used a flat screwdriver and wedged it between the seal and the casing. Be really careful tho directly behind the seal there is a bearing that you don’t want to damage

I got the new seal and wiped some fresh oil round the outside to help push it back in. The seal has a small taper to help line it up. I placed the seal in and lined it up as best I could, then placed a flat piece of wood across the seal and gave it a few taps with a hammer and the seal popped in to place no problem.

After that I put the drain plug back in and filled the gearbox with 2.7 litres of fresh oil. Easy Peasy, only took about 45 mins and I had it jacked up on the drive at home.

I also managed to take the sump off and replace my oil pick up pipe which was actually pretty clogged so glad I did. Also replaced the diverted valve and surprise surprise the old one had a ripped diaphragm. Was like a diffrent car when I took it out after. So all in all a pretty productive day. Hope this helps someone.

Gearbox is known code on o8 manual s3 I believe

The levels for gearbox is 2.3L 75w and transfer box 0.9L 75w80 or as same as rear diff 75w90

The cap is to cover the input shaft rear bearing, just had to change them the other day although mine was plastic with a circlip holding it in place… sorry I didn’t see this post until now

Good on you for adding the finish as it helps other members
