Finally picked up my B8 today and have been flicking through the owners manual tonight and the page that caught my eye was were you can find out how many keys are initialised to the car. So went to the car to check it out and the car tells me that 3 keys have been initialised, but the dealer only gave me 2.

So plan to ring the dealer tomorrow to question them about the missing key, but does anyone know how much Audi charge to have the missing key disabled or can this be done another way?

Is there a valet/diagnostic key in the glovebox, as this maybe the 3rd.

I think there is, but I understood it to mean the number of remote keys and not the emergency key.

I may have got it wrong, so will ring Audi tomorrow to check.

The plastic valet key in the glove box will start and run the car, don't leave it in the glovebox. This will count as one of the keys.

I'm only presuming its there as I saw the plastic adapter in the glove box. I'll go and have a check now.

yep, mine has two "real" keys and a valet key and states 3 keys assigned.

p.s. dealer advised leaving valet key in glovebox?

Just been out to car and only the plastic adapter is in the glove box, which means the valet key is missing as the dealer didn't give me it.

Im the same. Have two keys, then a plastic key cover in the glovebox. Nothing inside it. And it doesn't start the car...

The plastic dummy key in the glovebox is an Emergency key adaptor. The plastic key should be kept separate from the car because when the two are together the car can be started.

The spare plastic key should be with your spare key fob.

I have two keys and a plastic key but no adapter in gloves box. Should I worry that previous owner might be interested in getting car back?

Will not make any difference as they are from one design, you need the plastic key to do any thing.:)

I've got the 2 remote keys and 1 plastic adapter but no plastic emergency key. Spoke to the dealer and they said they not got it.

So I guess the previous owner still has it and forgotten to give it to the dealer or has lost it. Which concerns me some what, is there away if getting the emergency key disabled?

Plan to ring Audi dealer tomorrow, to see they can disable it as don't like the thought of the previous owner potentially still having the emergency key.

As I understand it you also need the emergency plastic key also in the plastic adapter.

The emergency plastic key has a immobiliser chip inside which is programmed to your car. In essence this is exactly the same as your normal key with out the remote locking. The adaptor is just a way to make the information fit in the key slot whilst not being a big bulk for the time it is not being used. When in the slot, the car will read the key information presumably via radio waves of similar and if programed it will start the car. All keys can be coded and even deleted from the cars memory if lost or missing. The only risk if missing is the key blade could in theory still open the drivers door but if it is deleted from the car it won't start. Also as per the owners manual if the drivers door is opened with a manual key you have to put a programed key in the ignition within about 30secs before the alarm will sound.

I presume only an Audi dealer can supply a replacement, but don't know how much it would cost.

I'm in the same position, as only got the 2 remote keys, 1 plastic adapter and no emergency key.

You should do this, but don't leave the key in the glove box.
