Just interested to find out when insurance prices become semi sensible really, I'm 21,fairly good postcode, 4 years no claims with 3 points september 2017. Im currently paying £61 a month for a polo 1.4 sport. To insure my a4 it was more like £120 a month however I'm wanting to do some pricey upgrades to the a4, (Ecu, turbo, supporting mods etc etc) My question goes out really to people a bit older, what has your experience been with insuring a modified car fully declared? Obviously theres the don't declare it route but I don't think its worth the risk. I don't really want to leave the car in the garage for 10 years

I should think age 23 to 25 will see you starting to get more affordable quotes. 3 points (presumably for speed?) wouldn't make that much difference if you weren't 21 but the combination is probably why it's north of £1400 for the A4. Is that before you add the interest for the premium finance? Paying up front if you can would help shave off maybe 9 or 10%.

Any performance mods will nudge the premium up, cosmetic ones not so much, if you use a mod-friendly insurer.

Perhaps mainstream insurers aren't as comfortable with those mods, though occasionally one comes up (but you'll never know if that's because they don't truly understand the mod). The key is to search around a mix of providers - those on comparison sites and those that aren't but make sure you do try specialist brokers too who often have unique deals available to enthusiasts and car club members.

Hi thanks for the reply yes the points were for speed, I did try to get a quote on the stock car with yourselves but you were unable to provide me with a quote, I think I’m going to wait till my year is up on the polo then I’ll have 5 years and be 22 hopefully it’ll be sub 1k by then but the insurers tell me that premiums are going up so who knows :sign unfair:

We would certainly be able to help you when you're older but 21 on the A4 is too young for our insurers' appetites I'm afraid. Normally you'd only be able to use the NCB on the one car but if you are keeping the Polo we could mirror the bonus across to the second car once you hit the magic age for our acceptance criteria. All the best with your search.

I'm 23 with an Audi A4 Sline 2009. I have 5 points on my licence due to speeding, 4 years no claims and I pay around £45/month and thats with AXA. Best bet is to phone them up direct.
