Looks like I will need to change the power steering pump on my b8 2.0 tdi (caga) as 2 garages are now not sure why my steering is heavy.

How easy is it? Does anyone have a guide or helpful hints?

Hoping I can do it without removing the fromt bumper.

Any pointers or help would be great!

hey - anyone done this before? I appreciate its quite rare!

Never had any PAS pump problems myself but have you checked the alternator pulley? I've had a couple go on recent VAG cars at around 140k. Symptoms have been heavy steering and judder near full lock along with the tensioner jumping around a bit on idle

Hi Diesel bob, thank you. That’s a good suggestion and was one of the things the second garage did as they are VAG specialist and know their stuff. It was something they checked and unfortunately wasn’t to be.

That’s what I thought originally and thought it was just tge battery. However its a mechanically driven pump off the aux belt.

Basically at standstill if you steer really slowly thw wheel is not that stiff however sudden steering change or steering quickly it goes really hard.

When you’re moving its not as bad but you can feel there’s no power steering as the steering isn’t as smooth.

So the garage has said its either the pump or the rack.

Looking at forums the pump seems really rare to go compared to the rack. Don’t know which to repace first.

Quick update - I’m pleased to say my issue has been resolved by fitting a new bosch power steering pump.
