Hi, I have a 58 plate A4 s-line avant, 2.0 TDI. The gearbox is really clunky and sometimes hard to get into gear, especially first. I'm sure I read that it is quite a common problem and putting a lower viscoscity oil into the box sorts it out. Does anyone know which oil to get to sort this problem out? Thanks, Nick.

I think most people put in OEM oil from Audi.

There's a few threads on here about it a quick search will find.

Oil is Audi G 052 171 A2. Lower viscosity then then the standard Audi Oil, makes a big improvement to notchy or stiff gear changes

Re-search this and this is what you will find:

A Special low Viscosity gear oil for VW, AUDI, SEAT manual Transmission 5 speed and 6.
VAG G052 171 A2.

Got mine from my local TPS(Trade Part Specialist)

Well worth doing!

So no specs, just a part number ?

Would be interesting to note the 2 different viscosities.

There is an article on the internet on VAG oils in general, quoting all the "modern" grades/specs/uses - that is probable what paul-psa is referring to, ie "go look > see". I stumbled on it recently using Google.

Nick_C,

The gearbox takes 4.2ltrs so you will have to buy 5 bottles of this lower viscosity oil G 052 171 A2 it is 75W-80
Price from Audi was about £20 per bottle as I remember, but I got mine from my local TPS(Trade Part Specialist) for £17 per bottle.
Lots have used and changed over to this oil on this forum and for less than £100 it will and does make a difference.

The standard oil is part number G 052 532 A2 and is a 75w - 90 oil which is most proberley in your gearbox at the moment.

This is common knowledge on this forum with plently of other threads on this issue, check them out.

Hope this helps,
