Gear lever cover

Hi all, Does anyone know how to remove the gearlever leather cover. Ihave tried to prise it up from the base of black plastic base. it does not seem move and I am going to damage the plastic suround. I want to get into the cable linkage to lubricate the ball assembly as it seems to be not as good as it used to be

I want to get into the cable linkage to lubricate the ball assembly as it seems to be not as good as it used to be

you don't need to remove the leather bit from the surround. if you open the ash-tray, then grab the front edge of the black surround with the tips of your fingers and give a good tug up and towards the rear of the car and it will come away. there are four pushpins under the surround holding it on.
