Faulty Thermostat?

hi all, great site, i have A possible problem here and wonder if any of you could help me...
i have an a4 b6 1.9TDi and the tempreture needle gage goes above 90 ..... this has been happening for the last 2 days... also when i start the car in the morning (cold) the gage is already above 50?
ive checked the coolant level when engine is hot and cold and it is ok.
any advice appreciated.

If the temperature goes to 50 striaght from start up then it sounds more like a problem with the coolant temperature sensor or the gauge. even with a thermostat stuck closed it will take a few minutes for the coolant to get upto 50C

Change the temp sender, £20 from dealer.
