Engine cut out on start up

Hi everyone my mate recently bought a A3 2.0tdi 140 on a 10 plate and occasionally the engine cuts out straight after starting but starts again no problem. Only does it once every 20 times he starts it.
Any ideas please.

Scan it to see if there are any stored fault codes

Make the fault repeatable on demand then you’ll be able to diagnose it

Otherwise you’re relying on pot luck with VCDS to flag something unfortunately.

The diagnosis was clutch DMF backlash but the engine turns over sooo slowly on cranking.
