Hi can anyone help me please? the emmisions warning light has come on in my Audi A4 1.8 tfsi 2008 model, does anyone know what it could be? i thought i would take the car on the bypass and see if i gave the car a little blast it would clear only to see that there was a lot less power with the car if you have any ideas what it could be as i,am dreading taking to Audi and get bad news i would rather have a rough idea what it might be and what that would cost to fix and 1 last thing is the car ok to drive till i get the car fixed thanks

You can't say to be honest' it is a lottery, it's going to be sensor based, just which one is the question, hence you need it in vcds. It's also a sensor related to fuel or air so for example

Maf
Lambda
coolant temp sensor etc etc

DPF fault?? Happened to mine so I had it ripped out lol..

How did you attempt to clear it?? Could you not get revs up to 4K?..

@hendo16, sorry to hear of your woes. The starting point here, as Paul has said, is to have the car scanned for faults. That can be done at an Audi dealer, but doesn't have to be. If you know a good independent garage that you can trust, they should be able to do the scan at a lower initial cost.

It could also be done by a forum member close to you that has the necessary software; it's called VCDS, and we have a thread where you can look for VCDS users near to you.

Another option is to do it yourself using a smart phone or tablet and an app called Carista. But you'd first need to equip yourself with a wifi or 3G dongle that plugs into your car's diagnostic port, allowing the car to "talk" to your smart device.

VCDS user map is here. If you want to buy VCDS for yourself contact forum sponsor and supplier @NHN. He is a top guy.

How to get up and running with Carista is here.

Whatever route you decide to take, good luck in getting it fixed. :)

Let us know where you live and users may give you recommendations of independents who you could use. It really could be something minor or not. I've have had the emissions light come on about half a dozen times with the three Audis I've owned and all were different. Last one required the intake manifold changing. One just needed a sensor. Another was a coilpack.

Hey Mister c I stay in Edinburgh but have my car booked into a garage for a week on wednesday cheers

Sounds to me like your car may be suffering from the dreaded oil problem. Has the car been using oil? I would check all four spark plugs for oil residue before replacing coil packs. If there is oil on a plug it will cause the car to run on less cylinders bringing up the emmision control light etc.. I know as I have been through the whole scenario...

Hi Mike, I can,t say the car has been using oil..I had the car serviced not long ago and old spark plugs where fine but still got changed and car has not used any oil and no warning lights have come on for the oil..The car is going into the garage a week on wednesday so hopefully doesnt cost to much to get sorted and thanks again for your help

Did the guy who cleared it tell you what it was about / give you a code reference? He would have seen a code and that would have given an insight into what it was/ what he will be looking at doing next week.

I think he said something about fuel or fuel pump not sure

Hope so mate. These TFSI's from 2008 will all need the oil consumption rebuild. Did you see the plugs? I would get the garage to pull a few plugs out to check. These incorrect fitting cylinder components can fail anytime so it can happen 'overnight'. Audi still won't admit it tho. Just see my thread...
Without decent service history it can also be a headache getting done for free!

I finally got my car back today..It was the fuel pump that had gone on the car and cost me over £300 to get it repaired..the car went in on wednesday last week got a call from the garage and told me it was the fuel pump so they would order it in and i would get my car back on thursday..then on thursday i got a call to say a pipe had not come with the part and should have so it would be friday before they could get the pipe then on friday to tell me it was the wrong pipe they had send so it would be saturday i would get my car..then on saturday i get a call to say guess what it was still wrong pipe it would be monday..and after all that it was a connector they had not sent and i got my car back all sorted and running great..so thanks to everyone for there help....

Glad to hear it wasn't the oil problem mate! However just be 'assured' every TFSI from mid 2008 upto present all exhibit oil problems. The ones that don't have been hand fixed like mine! Since last July it's not used any oil! Anyway let's see and let the saga continue..

Hi Mike ,my car is running fine for now but is there anything i should look out for with this oil problem? or what i would need to do to sort it out if it happens? thanks

It's a case of wait and see unfortunately mate! If so then you have the ammo to kick off...

Hi, as someone that lives round about Edinburgh, which garage did you use, asking really to get a feel for which of the VAG indie specialists are any good?
