Are they slotted discs? Did you check that the rear calipers are not stuck / sticking as they often do with age and the first time you notice is when you wind the pistons back in to replace the pads. See if the rear discs are getting hot, but that sounds like it's your problem.
Grooved discs can cause quite a bit of noise in reverse as they are biting into the pads the wrong way. Is it a clicking/ticking noise or a rattling noise?
