Hi guys im new here, Bought a 2001 Audi a3 1.8T 150 remapped. The car has been in the family many years so has been passed down.

Recently ive come across what could be the turbo failing, ive been seaching and checking other member turbo issues, but i they dont seem to relate to this issue. I have it booked in at a garage thursday, but thought id get a little info from thoughs who know what there talking about.

The car idles below 1000 rpm and feels like its about to stall.

Once moveing the car is jerky and feels like its starved of petrol.

Strugles to push into the turbo rev range 3000rpm.

and there is a grinding noise that keeps apearing.

Sorry if this has been covered already..

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks Jack.

Hi and welcome to ASN...

Based on the info above I wouldn't immediately say its the turbo... sounds more like an air leak... normal procedure would be to scan for fault codes and check for loose/split pipes etc...

The 'grinding' noise could be anything at this time as your description is just a little too vague to work out what you mean...

I would be checking all the boost pipes as the symptoms you describe are similar to what happens when a boost pipe pops off..

If there is a sensor or other electrical fault then there should be fault codes so a scan with VCDS (VAG-COM) should be top of the list...

Well i had a play around with pipes goin to and from the turbo and its now running tip top, it has run a bit rough before though, then corrected it self.

I did feel one of the plug in plastic leads was slighty lose. Could this have been the problem?

Thanks for your quick response tuffty.

Ok so after checking the pipes as advised, it turned out one of the pipes had popped out, Fixed this back up an boost was back. Unfortunetly the cars still running poor.

Took it to a local guy, who plugged it in to one of there computers. Came up with know faults. :S

So at the moment the car runs poor below 3000rpm, when hitting the boost range 80% of the time the turbo engages the rest of the time i get no boost.

Im at the point where im just going to have to let audi sort it. Although they charge £110 for a diagnostic :O :O

Any ideas?

Get someone with VCDS to scan it, it's only the same as what Audi have. Have a look at the map and see if anyone is near you with it.

I would advise not taking it to a dealer tbh as they just plug it onto a computer and follow a set of instructions changing almost everything, charging you a fortune and still not getting to the bottom of the issue... especially as yours is remapped they may just flash it back to std and you loose everything and pay them for the privilege of doing so...

Go to a specialist... where are you based?

Thanks for the advise tuffty i see your point, im based in crewe cheshire, if there is any known specialist around this area that would be ideal.
