Hi all

Our A3 is playing up once again (1.8 petrol, non-turbo/FWD).

Today it stuttered at 3-4k revs (not fun at 40mph) and then cut out altogether at idle.

Restarted the car (starts perfectly), but would not idle so cuts out straight away.

Drove vehicle back holding revs above 1k and parked up. Restarted and it idles fine again.

Any thoughts please?

Thanks for the reply.

Yes it's been scanned a couple of times at a VAG specialist and no codes

Cars cutting out when driving along and then starting again ok only after stopping and restarting - are often caused by a throttle position sensor. However, with a faulty sensor you would expect to get an error code stored in the ECU. Another possible problem is the ignition coil - do you have individual coils on each spark plug or a single coil pack? These can cause more vague symptoms which at best only show up on a code reader as a generic misfire. Finally, do you have details of the fuel filter being changed? They can become restricted and often get overlooked from servicing regimes - particularly on petrol cars.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Along with the coil pack/spark plus/ignition leads/MAF/thermostat/engine temp sensor last year, it has been serviced again with new oil/oil filter/fuel filter, and it seems to have solved the issues. The throttle body was also given a quick clean.
