Temp Sensor

My Car has been giving me some grief of late, it stalled on me at a roundabout over the weekend and wouldnt start for about 10 minutes, could this be the temp sensor as it was quite hot that day, although my needle was dead centre someone else suggested it could be a temperature sensor, going on from this how difficult are they to fit is it just a case of swapping it out or do I need to plug in VAG-COM etc?

sorry for got to add, after a long run if I stop the car it wont fire up again for some time, as though it's had time to cool
