Has my dashboard failed?

My audi a3 rev counter is idle at 3000rpm and goes over 7500rpm when im not even pushing it. does anyone know what the problem could be? has this happened to anyone else

I take it it's just the counter and the car isn't actually revving itself?

Sounds like a sensor fault rather than the whole cluster - but i'm no expert

yeah its just the counter and there is no reving
