Hey Guys

I was just wondering what everyone recons to filters other than the std paper type, I have heard of mixed reviews for the K&N filters but has anybody had any experience of the Pipercross, Jetex and BMC ones?

I have a 1.9tdi 110bhp.

Just thought i would add a pic of my car currently too:

40mm drop soon, along with black projector headlights which should be here this week.....

Thanks

Adam

Looks very nice there :) i dont know to much about the diesels but most people just stick with the paper, unless you want to fork out for the BMC ones which appear to be very good quality

ITG foam panel filters are very good .... (have one in my stage3+ S4)

I build engines, std recon and performance.

I never recommend foam filters for turbocharged cars, problem with foam is, it degrades with time, and the oil mist which is normally present in the turbocharger intake (it's never 100% absent) mixes with minute particles of foam, forming a paste.

This eventually clogs the oilways, and is one of the main causes of turbo bearing failure.

I recommend decent pleated paper panel filters, they'e a lot kinder to the turbo, and MAF in general.

Ok - but I've had it in for nearly a year with no problems to turbos or MAF... but I'll defer to your greater knowledge.:salute:

foam falls apart, (search CGTi and look for posts on them being sucked into DTH throttle bodies)
K&N can have oil issues on the MAF

Search vortex and you will see a post by a guy who tested all combos of CAI, air boxes, smoothed internal, foam, paper, K&N

end of the test confirmed that an OEM airbox with the vanes and internal baffles smoothed out with OEM paper filter and cold air RAm pipe into the base was by far the best flow

Vanes and internal baffles? Where are these on a B5 S4 air box?

Cold air RAM pipe into the base? Do you mean the base of the air-box? Not there on an OEM air-box so is this an after-market mod?

My 1.8t has baffles and vanes inside the box I'm planning on smootinh them out asap,

There are a couple of plastic "dividers" in the entrance to the air-box where the snorkel clips on - do you mean these are the vanes? How do you intend to smooth them out Biglockie?

And what do the baffles look like?

they are all round the internal surface of the box, certainly on my 1.8t, trumpets, ribs, vanes........chop em out and smooth them down. sure your S4 will have the same.

as for the cold air feed....afraid audi didn't think of this one you will have to make a hole and feed a pipe to it from the grill, (not too low) pretty straight forward.

Is there any chance of somebody getting some pictures of their air box after cutting the vanes etc out please, also some pics showing the routing for the cold air intake, also what sort of size and type pipe did you use for this mod?

The reason i am looking into this is that i would like to improve the throttle responce, as i currently feel it is a little slow, well for my liking....

Thanks

Adam

My airbox is pretty smooth inside - I've "swiss-cheesed" the bottom of the airbox (drilled a lot of small holes) and done the "sportec/darintake" mod (cut out the front/side panel that sits just behind the headlight)

As for the foam panel filter: I've just been speaking to my mate who owns/runs MRC tuning (Audi S4/RS4 tuning specialists) - he doubts that any particles of foam (if they break off at all) will ever get to the turbos ...

The ITG foam panel filter is a 3-layer construction and looks pretty robust - when I had the air-box out recently to put some APR i/c hoses on I took a look at the filter and it shows no sign of deterioration (on either side) whatsoever - certainly not "falling apart" (after nearly a year)

Couldn't find anything on the vortex forums about this (do you have a link to the thread?) - but did a bit of research on air filter testing - from what I could find the foam filters came out very well (in fact they came out best) and showed an increase in flow (i.e. a decrease in pressure drop across the filter itself) over the paper versions - thereby allowing better air intake to the engine.

But if my K04's ever melt then I'll do an autopsy to see if it's due to foam/oil paste blocking the oil lines and I'll let you know! ...

evening jules... oops ....dad:)

this has always been a very dodgy issue BUT...
i have to agree on both parts.
having run both on the rollers i hate to admit that the oem paper filter WILL pull more gps of air than anything else...! which in turn = more power.
but having said that the bottom end respose from foam or others by far out does the oem .. i have said this to many guys that have said there going to put a aftermarket filter in....

sadly most dont take my word but then its all swings and roundabouts.

personaly i used to run a k&n .
but most of the time sweet f*!k all as a filter but 3" tube from where the headlight was
and it done me 12.222 et:icon_thumright: on ko3's..

intresting to see who's running what ?

Hey Jack - ooops, I mean "son"! :icon_thumright:

Good points - interesting that on the rollers paper performs better than foam or cotton-gauze - and low down the rev range it's the opposite ... confusing no?

I've run OEM paper, K&N, Green and now running ITG foam - ****-dyno and feel of the car tells me the foam lets the car breathe best .... but that's just my subjective opinion ...

:) cool - no filter at all except a 3" tube from where your headlamp used to be! Nice one dude ... low 12's on K03's is superb!

can u wash the oem or just buy a new one?

I been running BMC for 4 years works well but no extra sound , they are not that expensive really, although i fancy trying a KnN or other open style filter

Not sure if washing a paper OEM filter would damage it - probably best to buy a new one seeing as they're only 11 or 12 quid (IIRC)

My pal has a PD 150 Golf GTI TDI and they all recommend Green Cotton panel filters. Dont waste your time with a cone filter.

Just gonna use a dremal to cut them out then use sand paper fo different grades to completely smooth the inside of the box to try to decrease the resistance of the air flow
