Hi,

A good friend of mine is considering a 2021 era 3.0 tdi Q7 to replace their aging 2007 Q7 3.0tdi.

As a "car person" and someone who likes German cars I am asked what I know about them, not a lot as I have never had one since always stuck with the trusty 2.0 tdi, however I'm keen to research. I've seen some videos from VAG Techniq who seemed to give a good summary where the issues seemed to be mainly be camshaft and tensioner related.

Obviously as with all internet reported issues things read worse than they actually are. My question to those that know on here is there a model year that should be avoided, I.e early production examples or is there an engine code that is less troublesome I.e. a lower powered example.

I've noticed the hybrids have the petrol v6 which could be an option if that engine is deemed more reliable, though hybrid gubbins may be its achilles heal. It's boot space my friend needs for 3 dogs rather than the 7 seat capacity.

Their budget is approx 35k.

Thanks
