I replaced an OEM cam follower recently with a Febi part and I'm getting a really rough noise at startup from the HPFP.
It's the second time I've replaced the cam follower and have double checked the pump was refited properly, all good.
Has anyone had a similar experince with aftermarket cam followers? I've got an OEM part on order just in case.

Febi are generally good, but everything has the possibility of not upto spec.

Have you checked the end of the follower for any marks, damage, did you check if the cam has any damage on the lobe, how's the nipple end of the pump?

All looked good. The follower was smooth the coating was wearing off but the surface was smooth cam and fuel pump looked good.

I use Febi and have done for a while with no probs at all.
Are you sure it is commomig from the HPFP, that wole area can be very ratttley?

It's the HPFP, I'm going to check it again as soon as I can get another follower, it looks like they are on backorder.

How rattley are these engines? I’m used to a 1.8t and them sounding quite smooth, so these sound really noisy so far to me.

They tend to rattle a bit but how much depends on milage and service history and parts replaced.
On 60k plus miles it is not uncommon to have a rattle from the vacuum pump, fuel pump cam follower, and injectors are just noisy full stop.
80k and beyond it will be above if not already sorted plus cam chain, cam chain tensioner and the cam chain adjuster.
Those are the main culprits, but a cam chain adjuster makes the most noise, and tends to make the engine sound like a diesel on idle.
best way to get a nice quiet engine is to ensure all above are ok and not worn, if they are just do the lot, not injectors as they are just clicky anyway.

I've replaced all parts above recently and it is a lovely and quiet engine again. :yahoo:

All probs have very subtle signs of wear and tear anyway, wear in the cam chain and tensioner are very apparent on startup then tend to quiet down , but cam adjuster will rattle all the time on idle and idle oil pressure, also engine timing will be effected so performance will be down.
cam follower tends to be a varied rattle but moreso when it is worn down to beyond the limit, the vacuum pump is a constant rattle if worn but goes away on faster engine speed.
Oil pump can rattle to on high milages but not as noisy as the rest of the parts at the top of the engine.
