Hi everyone. I need a bit of help and advice.

My car is just over a year old, but i've done a couple of track days on the factory pads and now they need changing. After some research I grabbed some EBC yellow stuff pads and was looking forward to getting them fitted today...but have hit a problem.

My car is currently in right now having front and rear brake pads changed with my local independent garage (They have worked on a number of my cars over the years and seem to know their stuff...).They have told me they can't get the rear pads off because apparently first the car needs to be put into service mode and none of their diagnostic tools they have allow this to happen.

I've told the garage to stop work for now as somebody on here must know... are they missing something simple or is there a special diagnostic tool they need to have to make this happen. Surely you wouldn't have to go to a main dealer every time you want to change brake pads?!

I know you need to wind them back, but I thought that kit like OBD11/VCDS could do it? I can't guarantee it though so I hope someone else knows and can help.

On the 8V RS3 the rear brakes doubled up as the handbrake too. Perhaps that is the added complexity?

TX.

Yeah the garage did mention something about the parking brake being on so I think you're right.

I just spoke to the garage again and they said they tried 4 different scanners and all were getting stuck asking for security code or something. The car is completely standard apart from the ASR exhaust controller. That surely wouldn't be causing an issue though and putting the system into lockdown mode?!

Hit a bit of a brick wall- they're keeping the car until tomorrow morning just in case anyone has any ideas on here...

Anything with an electronic park brake (Golf 7R etc) needed this:

I can only assume you might need to SFD unlock using OBDeleven but that seems a bit much but the way things are going

OBD11 to unlock SFD then initiate lining change mode.

Thanks for this- that looks so simple to use! Two questions:
- I’m assuming my local garage (non Audi specialist) wouldn’t have OBD11 and without this they won’t be able to unlock the parking brake?
- I guess the best option is for me to buy OBD11 myself. Where is the best place to buy it for UK delivery?

Yes they’ll need something SFD capable like this, sounds like they haven’t got it.

I’ve run into a bit of a problem….
So I got OBD11 pro pack from the link you sent (it arrived very quickly!) and I figured I would test the rear brake pad function ready for it to go into the garage on Monday next week. Unfortunately it didn’t go well!!

I followed their instructions step by step and was able to cycle the brakes to OPEN and then turned the car off (simulating the brake pad change). Then when I turned in back on I was greeted with loads of error messages on the dashboard… parking brake failure, Hill assist failure etc etc. I was able to cycle the brakes to CLOSE in OBD11 but all the errors are still there and I’m very nervous about driving the car or trying anything else. Any other ideas?

OBD11 didn’t look like the video you posted but I’m assuming it’s because it’s the next generation version…

Plug back in and connect to the car.

Once it’s finished scanning tap on the red module icon (bottom right corner) you can then scroll thru the various modules fitted and any with faults will be highlighted in red.

Click on a module with a fault and from there you can read the error and clear it.

Make sure bonnet is popped

Screen similar to below

Muppet of the week award goes to me …. So the final step is to ‘cycle the EPB off and on’ which should clear the issues and warning. In a bit of a panic with all the errors popping up I forgot to have my foot on the brake whilst doing this and it doesn’t work without that!

Has anyone found another way to do this with just VCDS?

don't really want to go buy odb11 to just change some rears...

You’ll need it to unlock SFD.
